    Longlife zorst bodge

Picked up my ABY up from MRC this week after having headgasket etc done,Doug tells me cars well down on power and reckons its the crappy 2.5" Longlife Exhaust system. (Cat & exhaust been on there approx 2 years, fitted at Leeds branch)

Have done hardly any miles since i bought the car, literally bought it and took it to MRC. What i did notice tho was a massive drone between 3 - 4000rpm, not a throaty/sporty boom but as if someones stuck a banana up my zorst (ohh err.. )

Been up to the Berkeley Longlife branch today, got it on the ramps and the fitters seemed quite surprised with what they found.

1 – From the 2 standard downpipes coming down from the engine, this had had then been joined to a single/central Longlife cat and pipe running all the way back.

2 - the Longlife CAT was right underneath g/box housing, hence causing it to rub/bang.

3 – (we all found this rather hard to believe) – the system had the been brought down to a 2” where it bends over rear axle etc..It was quite funny after the boss was giving me the b*llshit that you couldnt get any bigger over there, then when we asked his fitter he said "yeah, 3inch - done quite a few on s2's no probs!)

What are peoples thoughts on this? Could this really be causing this problem??

If you are down to a 2" system then you are probably strangling it. I think the standard one is 2.5" for a start.

Not sure what your next move it, presumably the longlife has a lifetime warranty. I would be asking if they are prepared to rework the system for you, to the standards that others have had their S2's made to. You may have to pay if you are not the original owner when the Longlife system was bought, but see what they can do for...

    HTH

    Cheers,

    Steve.

PM this guy...tell him i sent you.

Ask if he has any pics of the system affaik fitted by a Longlife outfit they did for his 20v into a t85 cq.

Me thinks they used mandrel bent sections to get the fit just right. Article went in Audi Driver.

        Will do, cheers Carlos.

Steve - i spoke with Mal (the MD of Longlife) mid-week, he tells me "yeah, no worries, the Berkeley lot will look after you". After this afternoon tho im not so sure. Coz its a franchise they cant pick up the mess for Leeds work. Also, like you say, it is a Lifetime guarantee but only for the old owner.

This is something i'll be taking up with this Mal on monday, as like Doug says, it def aint doing the engine any favours and its making it run like a bag of poo. TBH, not really keen on having a replacement Longlife anyway but will try and strike a serious good deal for a 3" Turbo back ALL THE WAY and see what happens.

Should be cool but if no movement might have to get more persuasive :mischeif:

The Leeds longlife branch is A1 Rotorboy had his 3" system done there and that was mint.

The problem with longlife is that the franchise branches aren't the same quality.

Not Leeds, but I know that Exhausts UK in sheffield do a great job for a great price.

HERE is the link to the thread on the exhaust I had built.

                  I would recommend them highly.

No disrespect but that exhaust design is awful.

The pictures in Rotoryboy thread have gone but Gregs is a prime example of the correct design.

Oh don't start on this again!

I wasn't recommending that MadS2 get an exhaust which matches mine (I would hope not seeing as my car is an S6). I was recommending a place for decent custom stainless exhausts in Yorkshire.

For MadS2: They'll design it exactly how you want it and even tune the sounds for certain rev ranges. Just make a note of where in the rev range you drive mostly and get them to make it quiet for that area.

To be honest there is no real point paying for a new exhaust in an S2 unless your changing the downpipe it's a waste of money as your still not addressing the biggest restriction of the system bar the cats.

If I was just casually modding i'd decat and thats it.

If you paying for a system replace the downpipe and go for a single exit.

Go for 2.75" or 3" but ofcourse there is a sound penalty when enlarging. ( RS2 uses a 2.75" downpipe good for at least 350 bhp ).

Just had a reply from Longlife Berkeley after the Cardiff Headoffice (Mal) just passed my email onto Berkeley - what do you all make of this loads of balls??:

Darre, What you state is correct, however the pressure drop over the short distance should be acceptable and presumably the original fitted did it this way to ensure that there would be no impingement to the axle or body, with perhaps only a few millimeters clearence if he had used 2.5" let alone 3", and prompts the question, why Audi do not build their systems in 3"?

With regards to your penultimate paragraph, we would like to help you in this matter. The normal price for a Cat back system built in 3 ", from the existing Y piece after the existing Cats, is #699 inlcuding VAT.

However you require the system from the turbo back which adds another #650 to this total including two new Cats.

Why not consider building from the existing down pipe flanges with two new cats, in 2.5" opening up to 3" after the bifurcation, where we will fit a single 3" cat capable of handling with minimum pressure drop, 300BHP.

The cost of this would normally be #360 which added to the #699 makes a total of #1,059 including VAT, and should you decide to invest in the work prior to the Christmas break we will pay the VAT as a goodwill gesture.

Please reply to me with your thoughts.

                            Regards.

                            Robin Abrey.

So it seems they've bodged it up and are trying to charge you for the privilidge of sorting it out?

                              Am I missing something here??
