    Leather adhesives

Hi. Im in the process of re-trimming my door card panel inserts from jacquard to leather so that they'll finally match the rest of the interior!! Doing it myself as it should be a reasonably easy and inexpesnive job to do! I've got two spare foam panels to act as templates and on which to mount the leather, (currently covered in a horrible blue fabric!!)

My intention is to strip this old fabric off and glue nice black leather in its place, trim it to size and then swap the door card inserts. Alternative I might get away with leaving the fabric where it is and sticking the leather direclty ontop - might not be too bulky and could stick better - dont know!

Anyone any experience of doing this sort of thing – mainly the best type of adhesive to use to glue leather onto the thin foam backing?? I was thinking of trusty evo stick contact and will probably use that to stick the insert back onto the door card, but wondered if there were any types that were better suited and also given the surface area to cover to make sure it sits smooth and flat. Used Bostick leather glue on numerous occasions but would need to test it, seen some 3M spray adhesives somewhere, or possibly some adhesive type tape? Not going to be very easy I think to spread glue on thin foam!

    Cheers

    Paul

(Thanks for the sensible suggestion Pete - will check that out! Something I could spray onto the foam would be useful)

I never liked the sound of this job.
For sticking the foam onto the leather I'd go for a spray contact adhesive. Halfords do 2 types. One is an unknown 'ICE' branded version and the other is a LOCTITE branded and is found with the rest of the adhesives. I've tried both and while I had no probs with the white can, I'd always go with a brand given the choice.

I never quite worked out how the cloth trims were attached to the doorcards. You'd expect the cloth bit to come off separately, but on mine, the cloth was stuck to the foam and the foam stuck directly to the plastic door card. Edges were somehow tucked in to grooves moulded in the doorcard. I'd be interested to see how you manage to get the edges stuck down neatly as I couldn't figure it out in any simple way!

I was surprised also at how they are attached Alistair! You're right the foam backing is stuck directly to the doorcard, orginally with some sort of single piece adhesive membrane. The foam Ive removed has retained the moulded shape on the edges so it almost grips this edging like finger ends against a sort of channel where it meets the door card proper. So long as the leather follows this moulding with the foam I should be ok I think, tho trimming it flush with the foam will be important here! I going to try this method rather than wrapping the leather under the foam and attempting to stick it that way.

The reason being that doorcards with the leather S2 interior we transplated into my cq20v had a card backing which caused problems as it couldnt bend sufficiently to fit this edging, most noticable at the door edges by the lock etc. It had been removed from its original door card as it needed to be swapped from a grey to a black interior. It was too bulky and stiff and never did sit properly because it couldnt follow that moulding I now realise! Hopefully the foam with hug it as it did originally, just with leather on the back this time and be ok! I dont know what an original leather door card uses as backing - my donor is just the marine blue fabric from a non S2 coupe. Thanks for the spray advice too!

              cheers

As slow as it may sound, I'd be prepared to drill small holes every 10mm and manually thread the edges to the underside of the doorcard to pull down into the moulded channels.
