  • Handbrake Removal?

    How the hell do you remove the handbrake so i can get my center console out!!

    I was told to push the end piece away from the back shroud so that they just part company and then put a small slot screwdriver in and push the little tab down.

    Won't budge!!

    after about half hour of sweating and cursing, I give up.

      You don't need to remove the handbrake if you are careful.

      1. Once the front screw and rear nut are removed, raise the handbrake as high as it goes and reach under to disconnect the cig lighter diff lock wiring.

      2. Put the car in first and then lift the centre console up and forwards along the thin part of the handbrake.

      3. With the handbrake in the middle of the console slot, pull the console side out and lift a few mm so that it clears the handbrake handle. Then holding it there, pull the other side out and lift again.

      4. The console will now slide forwards along the handbrake and off (hence needing to put the car in first.

      Trust me, the console will easily open enough and this is much easier than removing the handbrake.

      Refittin is the reversal of removal

      Cheers n

        BTDT as well - Si's description is a good un...

        I usually end up cursing the wiring for the difflock switch though - that can sore on the old chewed fingers.

          One other thing I thought would be good to add (for the archives too) is to be carefull with the front centre console itself if you plan on removing it to gain access to aux gauge etc.

          To keep it looking like this;

          And avoid it looking like this;

          Then be very carefull when removing the front console. Don't lift it up at the back (handbrake side) to far or you'll break the plastic tabs off that slot over the two retainer clips on each corner (arrowed, hidden from view)

          Hard to explain in words, hopefully the pictures explain it better.

                  I've also removed the center console without taking off the handbrake cover, tho I did try.

                  So whats my options for a standard 5 speed gearknob? mine needs changing as worn and if they are NLA not good.

                        5 Speed available. I bought one for our '80 Sport a couple of months ago.

                        Cheers,

                            5 speed and early 6 speed as still being sold through vagparts, just the later one like I have is NLA as I was told by vagparts when I tried to order a new one

                            Link

                            I'm guessing the question is coming, whats the difference between early and late 6 speed?

                            See pic of later one below;

                              mines already like that.

                              Thought it looked wrong.

                              oh well I can look on the bright side. I don't have to worry about breaking them.
