what is this?

got into my car after it was parked in a long stay car park while on holiday & I found this item rolling about in the drivers footwell!
It looks like something you would find attached to a brake or clutch pedal, its white plastic, has a couple of (broken) heavy spring coils round the circular bit & has a hole right thru it.
Car runs fine with no strange feelings in the pedals or steering & I can for the life of me see where it could have come from!
Any ideas?

so Im guessing its not an essential part & the car will be fine without?
Or does it cause problems elsewhere?

I would replace it, without that part the pedal is pushing down on the MC all the time by its own weight so the release bearing may be running.

hmmm, so this acts as a return spring device for the clutch pedal?
Any good mail order VAG suppliers you know of now vagparts is no more?
( I hate my local stealers!)

Based on McAndlar's post with the diagram, the item in question, over centre spring, is either an 4A0 721 403E marked with red or an 8A0 721 403E marked with brown.

Was it found that the spring is either of these part numbers: 4A0 721 403E marked with red or an 8A0 721 403E?

Can you advise ben? also whats the damage on these at the moment.
