    Water leak passenger footwell

Evening guys and girls...Hoping someone else has come across this and I do have an incline as to what it might be but noticed windows have been steaming up on the inside which as you all know points normally to water ingress nine times out of ten so feeling around, noticed the passenger footwell was wet..

Removing a few trims etc this evening and the glovebox, I noticed a few spots of water, previously a line coming down the left back corner of the bulkhead, under felt is soaking so defo decent leak somewhere.

My initial thoughts are it could be the drainage holes from the sunroof or some kind of blockage under the wiper scuttle tray but thought maybe someone else has had this and may save me a load of time etc??

Whilst in there too, that location I mean, I also noticed this little white chamber, braided type sections are wet and it wasn't fixed so if anyone can point me in the direction of what this is and if it should be fixed somewhere, please also help on that if you don't mind??

Also your pic is not showing. It might be the moisture trap for the vac line to the ECU.

What car is it? Coupe 3B or ABY or Avant?

Yes, that's the ECU vac line moisture trap, it usually sits in a little foam block behind the carpet in the corner there.

OK Newsh, thanks for confirming that, just been reading through your posts on the previous links, great work and information...

First port of call the weekend then, will take the scuttle tray off and check to see if there is any cracks there, will check the drain holes from the sunroof too...

Then, having OCD, I know I will be removing all of the seats, carpets and soundproofing to dry, checking all areas of the car too whilst there... Hate water ingress.....

I do have another small leak on the drivers side but only when driving along I notice small beads of water coming through the velvety looking part of the door seal, immediately to the side of my head. It never amounts too much but builds up to a few drips and a moist line of a few inches..? You haven't experienced this too by any chance?

Most water leak problems with coupes are to do with poorly replaced windscreens, where the roof edge trims are not re-sealed correctly to the body.
Either that or cracks in the seam sealer of the scuttle tray.

As mentioned somewhere on the other two threads linked here, it is a good bet the sunroof drip tray is causing trouble.

I had a leak in this same corner on my car recently and had to empty out 5-6 litres of water that appeared over a fortnight it was that bad. Careful use of a hose to trickle water into various places showed that when directed over the sunroof area, the water was coming out under the dashboard. Some was seen coming out from underneath the A pillar trim at the dashboard end and then running behind the carpet.

It can't get through the door seals and run down the inside of the trim so it has to be further up. Slide the sunroof back and have a look at the front of the drip tray where the 'spoiler' pops up. Underneath that is a trim part that should be screwed down and sealed to the rest of the sunroof cassette...

Mine wasn't and it was clear as day this was causing trouble when directing the hose down the drain channels. With the roof slid back I was squirting down the drain channels to see how they flowed and they were o.k, BUT in TORRENTIAL rain the channels can't keep up and the drip tray filled up to the point where it found the sealant under the trim part was no longer sealing. 20 + years old and it had just dried and cracked. I don't think it helps that my driveway points slightly downhill so all the water from a heavy storm has to escape through the front channels.

Annoyed there was yet another leak into the car but happy to have found another cause.

My solution was to remove the pop up spoiler, unscrew all the small screws securing the trim part, clean ALL the old sealant off from all mating surfaces and apply new stuff. screw back into place, cleanup any excess and bingo. Once dried i repeated the hose pipe test and it was fixed!

Its dead easy to spot the problem - all you need to do is slide the sunroof and get your hose pipe out. Just be careful with your aim! ;-)

After all that; I tackled removing and retrimming the headlining which was already suffering from the crumbling foam backing and had suffered even more with having water on it. New headlining makes a HUGE difference to how the inside of your car feels and is well worth the time it takes.

Newsh, you wouldn't have a link for that seam seal stuff you mentioned too would you? Might pay to order some before the weekend knowing what could be ahead of me

You mentioning the windscreen, it has had a new windscreen recently, there are glass fragments (coming out the weekend) in the scuttle tray, so maybe that wasn't fixed correctly before? Could be that?? If it is, then bummeroony... someone also bodged the rear view mirror back onto the screen, looks like they scratched a patch of the glass first (which you can see from the outside back in) and then bonded it on that way.

May need an accidental new screen sometime soon if that's the case, can you recommend anyone or will autoglass someone like that do an ok job, supply ok too?

Sorry to ask questions but you obviously have experience with leaks and what could be's...

Steve, thanks for taking the time to write your experiences to try and help, I will definitely look at that the weekend too.

Going to be carpets out and soundproofing too, dry all and then selective water input to determine exact cause... water leaks, who'd have em!!!!
