This is proper high end stuff. No fancy crap with an 18 letter acronym. Simple yet very effective. A mate of mine has had two CD HUs and swears by them.

I own an Alpine MDA 7755 and Kenwood KMD PS971. Both decent MD HUs with RRPs in the £400-£500 bracket. Kenwood piano black finish looks great in the S2! Alpine lacks features but Kenwood can be a bit tempremental as the flexi lead on the MASK system is a well know weak point. Both available off Ebay for around £100.
Looked at the CD500 but i the problem with them is they dont like cdr discs.

Looked at the alpine 9965r, it's alot of cash!!!

I concur on the Blaupunkt not being the best choice. I've got a Woodstock DAB54 (supposedly top of the range bar satnav) and I've had CD failure on two units. I now just use a 1gb memory card in the SD slot (which is a really cool feature, but poorly executed - limited text info due to low resolution screen, and takes a good 20secs to read the card when switching on.)
Sound quality seems fairly good but with nowhere near a high end Alpine's adjustability.
The best thing about it are the looks (in my opinion). Matches VAG consoles really well.
Just waiting for one of the serious brands to release a top notch DAB system with memory card function.

A mate of mine uses Alpine and the difference between that and his top notch Kenwood was noticable, i dnt have model numbers to hand but the Alpine def puts out a better sound!

You an buy alpine or JVC that does the same for £300-400

Ant can you find out the model number?

I'm loathed to go Alpine as i'd need to buy an active crossover to replace the one thats in the 9400 built in (hence why i was looking at the 9600 as it has the same feature)

Alpine 9835, kicks most other headunits SQ butt as do the higher end Alpine's...full on-board DSP for time phase/correction of all speakers and extremely comprehensive eq. options for proper in car acoustic tuning...plus total integration of iPod control, can't be beat for the price...think the newer model is much the same with a slightly different interface....

Agree 110% with you. Mine is back at Blaupunkt as it keeps turning off !! I do like it for the sound and the SD slot.
I have a load of music now in FLAC form and I am getting bored burning CDs. Has anyone experience of Kenwood heads that can work with the phatbox system ??
