What modern tech have you added inside you S2/RS2?

Ive been thinking of adding some tech to the inside of my RS2. Ever since I purchased the car the dome like doesnt work because its got a missing switch and I havent been able to find one the correct colour. The other thing that has happened is that the cloth on the headlining is starting to come apart, so it will need a retrim.
Its got me thinking of adding a custom dome light from another later model Audi? Id also like to have some of those neat lights that glow at night?
Ive also been thinking of adding a hard mount for the following:

    - Valentine V1 radar
    - Nav screen (fooled down maybe)
    - Phone or sunglasses holder
    - USB point?

My RS2 doesnt have a sunroof so I dont have to worry about a sunroof switch and I guess my headlining is higher because I dont have a sunroof?

Also floating around in my head is the idea to get a second headlight switch to the dash, gut it and modify it to be a USB plug? Maybe a double USB plug?

    What do you guys think?

Also could you recommend a nice VAG dome light to add?

I don't think there are any later model dome lights that would be plug and play. Suspect a B5 would be your best bet (from an early A4) but it's not a given.

There are some ciggy lighter sized USB adapters available these days but a panel mounted adapter would be cleaner - perhaps located close to OE lighter socket. There are also USB hubs available for in car applications that could hide in the glovebox for example.

Another possibility is to sacrifice your ashtray location and use that for something interesting.

When my radio died in the S2 I thought of installing the zeitronix display in its place. Others have gone for full blown in car PC installs.

Converting your 2x2 OBD adapter to the standard 16 pin ISO plug will give you other options for OBD and datalogging if you wish.

Going for things like TV in car are also possible with aftermarket aerials, tuners and displays but the biggest hassle will be making a nice neat installation - trickiest would be an elegant looking fold down display. More modern Audis have the aerials built into the windows and you may struggle to find aftermarket tuners with 4 inputs - they usually have only 2.

I replaced the cigarette lighter with a USB port. I moved the lighter socket to the lower left side of the center console, near the passengers footwell.

Nice idea that is Pat. I use a lighter socket USB converter which does the same thing but ovvo doesn't look anywhere near as good. That is about the limits of any tech in my car other than a stereo and my right foot.

Hi - could you explain this in a bit more detail? I had always assumed that because the S6 isn't OBD II, then I'd never be able to get any of the 'stock' OBD II info (boost, revs, temps etc) from the 2x2 cable... is this not the case?

            Cheers,
            Tom

This conversion means that you take 16 pin plug from another car (B5 for example) and connect it to cars 2x2 diagnostic outputs so you won't need 2x2 to 16 pin adapter anymore and you can place it anywhere you want inside car instead of having it under the bonnet.
BTW C4 A/S6 already has a place for 16pin connector - under carpet piece inside pocket thats next to handbrake in center console.
I did this on my car too

And speaking of lighting upgrades - door lights from C5.

The AAN ECU does provide a decent level of data for live monitoring over the OBD port (with or without 2x2 cable as you wish) - you cannot get boost info from OBD unfortunately… quite why the Bosch lads decided to omit that is beyond me. You will get the following :

                  RPM
                  Air Temp
                  Water Temp
                  Injector Duration
                  Throttle Position
                  Ignition Advance
                  Ambient air pressure
Lambda values (only in closed loop mode)
and a bunch of other less useful things

Check out the OBD pages on www.s2central.net in the tech section for lots more info - the AAN ECU is very much like the ABY in this regard.

                      Thanks - interesting stuff!

Is there any way to access this data without using VAG-COM - e.g. is it possible to put some kind of translation device/layer between the ECU output and an OBD II reader?

Any such device will have to use the OBD protocol as thats the only thing the ECU understands - its a global standard used to simplify all of this in car diagnostics shenanigans… There are cheap and cheerful code readers you can plug in for this kind of data, or options running iOS or Android apps over Bluetooth which are more convenient than having a laptop attached with dangly cable and VAGCOM running.

I am exploring the iOS route at the moment - waiting on some stuff to test with.

I'd be very interested to know what you find out. I've got one of the Kiwi PLX OBD II devices and DashCmd on iOS but obviously that's not going to be any use on its own!
