    Thunk noise on full lock

Last few days I've noticed that occasionally, when manoevering at parking speed and using full lock, there will be a strange "thunking" noise coming from the front when you engage full lock and then apply a bit of throttle to move. Don't tell me, is this the damned top strut mounts going already ?

I've heard the same sound with mine also But not always
      Maybe the strut mounts indeed.

Am curious what this is, mine doesnt do it, but i remember it being something to look out for when buying an S2, as i tested it on all the cars i went to see.
There was a really really nice black metalic S2 in Kent i loved, but was oil leaking from engine and this clunking on the steering... had everything from memory, aircon, sunroof, the lot!

Might be steering compents worn? damper arm?

A common test for the CV joint is to drive forwards on full lock, then reverse on the opposite full lock.

If your car clonks under this test, it is usually the CV joint.

I'll check to see if there's any leaking CV grease. I had one of the fronts go about 18 months ago, so I suppose the law of Sod says the other one should be going as well?

I've found two main culprits for clunks on full lock, both tend to happen when you are turning the steering whilst you're stationary - parking, etc.

The front springs can move on the spring perch, this tends to happen under maximum twist as you approach full lock. I have Konis, not sure if this is common with them? This got quite loud on my car until I jacked it up and checked out the springs. I moved them back to contact the stops and the noise went away. Unfortunately, it had a habit of coming back until I fitted Tim's top mounts. Not sure if the mounts fixed it or it was just coincidence

The other clunk I found was the droplinks, a bit of wear in these and you can get clunks and knocks while driving and on full lock. Both are easy to check when the front end is off the ground.

On a Ur quattro its generally the wheel bearing that moves in the leg, most people think it's springs, top mounts, "A" frame bushes etc etc, but it is the bearing that shifts between the "C" clips, might not be the same on an S2 but worth a look...

I had this on my Ur Quattro and it has come back. I also got it on my s2. On my UR it was the spring had moved a bit causing the clunk. How can u stop the spring from moving? cheers

I was wondering if it might be droplinks - I changed my ARBS - uprated the front to the RS2FARB but didn't change the droplinks. What's a visual sign of wear on these to look for?

I have just had the same fault cured on my S2. The nearside wishbone bushes were U/S. With the car ramped and weight off suspension, the wheel could be moved sideways about an inch and a half using large levers. I opted to have the whole unit replaced ( and have the old one for refurb ). Lovely and quiet to drive again and roadholding/handling back to "quattro" levels.

I think I need to spend a bit of time and money on this. Thanks for all the advice!

Mine had it a couple of times. It were the top mounts that were worn.
