A couple of questions regarding the PAS pump on my Avant. What is the correct part number for it? Is there anyway of disconnecting it quickly or easily just to make sure it is that which is making the noise?
Also, is there any other parts i would need to change at the same time, like belts, washers etc.

A kind of whirring, groaning sound. Not constant, but fluctuates. Sorry difficult to explain in words. I have done the screwdriver trick and as far as i can tell it is coming from the PAS pump.

I got same issue, its louder than my engine. IM waiting for it to die so i can order a new one as its bloody expensive. Cheapest I found is from VAG parts
If you wait for it to die, you could end up in serious sh@t as it is the same pump that does the brake assist. A sudden failure would leave you with a hard to stop / hard to steer lump weighing in @ 1500kgs.

Or you can buy the repair kit and have yours rebuilt. The repair kit is about £15 and then its just a labour charge from the repairer, far cheaper option. I had this done, Graham did it this way and Aussie Graham the same. Ours are still going strong

mark, could let me know where i can get this repair kit? and by repairer do you mean a specialist PAS establishment?
