Sorry Greg, I was just joking about the Dukes. I was probably fantasizing about Daisy Duke and her denim shorts again

We have seen the canyons in films such as Duel and on the Jamiroquoi music video, Ferrari F40, Lambo diablo etc.

I am trying to get round to making enquiries about Making some big anti roll bars. I must start a thread.

Another problem is the fact you lot drive on the wrong side of the road anyway, What chance would we have coming the other way

      David,
Trust me, Daisy does not look as good now as she did then. She has not aged well. The fanny would definitely not fit in those shorts any more.

Yea, I drive some of the same roads that Spielbergs movie Duel was made from. Off course, a few more people on the roads now than then.

I was thinking the same thing about larger bars. I definitely like adjustability. I have an adjustable bar on my 914, and like being able to fine tune. I would do something like the Whiteline with the various holes adjusting the torque of the bar. The shorter the arm length, the more torque required.

Yea, wrong side of the road. Probably had to do a lot with that revolution thing. Just had to be the opposite. Probably why we drink more coffee over here instead of civilized tea.

But alas, a lot of area over to drive on the wrong side of road. Over there you drive over to the continent, and you have to change sides. That other island nation in the Pacific drives on the same side as you. But a little difficult to get to by driving. Maybe that is why the Japanese started making there cars in the USA, workers just couldn't remember what side to put the steering wheel on.

They can have my car when they pry my cold dead fingers from the steering wheel.

        Hey Greg,

I know about Daisy, but I live with my memories.

Fanny has a very different meaning over here, ( different side of the body! but only on ladies).

I have started a thread about ARB's in the group buy section.

The American revolution took some organising, we wanted to off load one of our colonies anyway, look at the trouble you have had with the country in the last 200 odd years.
        ( joke)

It has some advantages, the japanese get rid of their cars after a few years and we get the choice of some pretty interesting High performance cars. Not as good as Audis though. Have you seen www.nissanmicraforum.com? no neither have I.

I still fancy moonshine running in the hills with a Big block rat motor in a matt black Hot rod..... I'm sure Boyd could knock up something suitable!

        D.

I have a 26mm genuine Audi ARB on the rear of my car. Marco has one of these as well.

            Hi Doug,
Very nice write up. Answers a lot of questions for both David and I. But that is what these forums are for.

I only way I knew of before this was changing out the rear wishbones so you could us a 4000Q front bar. You did a great job of coming up with a different solution.

I do have a couple of questions if you don't mind?

Do you have the larger RS2 bar on the front of your car or did you stay with the stock one?

One of the items you have listed is the droplinks are from a Saxo. I have no Idea what a Saxo is. Can you give me a hint?

I noticed your last posting on the other thread was from September last year. Do you have any further updates and driving impressions since that time?

Do you have a list of the heim joints and other hardware you used when you modified the top of the drop link? Looking back on it, you could have used a hiem joint with a smaller diameter hole in it. Then you would not have needed to drill out the upper strut mounting hole?

Again great write up. Thanks for steering David and I in a whole new direction.

              Not at all.

Do you have the larger RS2 bar on the front of your car or did you stay with the stock one?
I have the RS2 one on the front - I had that on before I changed the rear so can not comment on what it felt like with standard front ARB - I'm not sure if Marco has the RS2 one on the front?

One of the items you have listed is the droplinks are from a Saxo. I have no Idea what a Saxo is. Can you give me a hint?
A saxo is a cheap small Citreon - You basically want to find a car that has droplinks that bolt vertically down onto the ARB. You areprobably best to visit a scrap yard to look at loads of different cars to see what droplinks migh be a straight fit.

I noticed your last posting on the other thread was from September last year. Do you have any further updates and driving impressions since that time?
I have not driven it that much - it has been gettting other work done. It does stay very flat though and you can get the rear starting to drift - it's a very differnet experience form the usual Audi boat feel - I can't say much more until I drive it in anger more. Marco can add more to this though.

Do you have a list of the heim joints and other hardware you used when you modified the top of the drop link? Looking back on it, you could have used a hiem joint with a smaller diameter hole in it. Then you would not have needed to drill out the upper strut mounting hole?
I will need to look out my receipts to give a complete list but I think I said in the thread - if you get the droplinks and they are too long - cut a part out of the centre, thread the 2 ends, and get an internally threaded bar. now you have shorter droplinks - probably the cheapest way to do it. Of course you can weld thing - I never had access to a welder when I did this - I would probably cut, strengthen and weld them if I did it again.

Again great write up. Thanks for steering David and I in a whole new direction.
It's all Marco's fault - it's called the "Marco Rear ARB" - he has a write up for using the same ARB but different mounting of the droplinks. You get a lot of satisfaction from doing something like this.

I have a coupe quattro 20v, I will look underneath and verify if it is the same. I have a spare ARB in storage

I will look at options for drop links, If a proper one cant be found the answer is to cut and weld.

                  David,
I have a coupe too. I checked most of the part numbers compared to the S2, and it should work.

Personally, I like the treaded top. Or instead of welding, which may introduce a weak point in the rod, you could use a threaded sleeve. Of course, you then need to find the appropriate right handed die for use on one end of the rod. But this is a much stronger way to go, plus depending upon the length of the sleeve, it would allow you a measure of adjustablility. Works like a tie rod. This is always a good thing.

                    Hi Greg,

The arm would be TIG welded and stress relieved. It is only mild steel anyway. I will look at drop links and see what is available. It may be a Euro car only tho'.

I will post something when I have time. Too many Masonic meetings at the moment as well as a 2 week old son called Gregory!! and the car club as well. Gregory has 5 aunts who want to look after him. I don't get a look in sometimes.

I know about the Euro car thing. Like the Saxo. As far as the Audi Euro thing goes, I have both the Euro Ekta and the north American Ekta. Trust me, I am always doing the comparsion part number checks.

Named your son Gregory huh? Damn good name if I say so myself. Yea, with 5 aunt you will never get to see the kid. But look at the bright side, 5 built in babysitters. That will pay off later.

Sarah chose his name, I chose William as the middle name. 5 aunts also can be a trial. Actually it's 4 sisters and one sister in-law from Italy who is called Nirvana and she is mad. Great fun but mad!

I keep telling him about suspension and things like that and they frown for some reason! As for talking about Morris Minors they try to take him away talking about placing him in care!

Yeah yeah whatever! I have TIG welded the rear drop links on my coupe and they have been fine no probs at all. They are even welded at an angle of about 25 degrees part way down the rod. No bending or breakages, and I do drive hard on the track

Just had a thought that it doesn't have to be the same drop link welded back together. It could be an Audi Top part and a Saxo or similar bottom part welded together.

On one of my Minors I have used a DAF 55 front arb (14mm thick!) and old Jaguar 'S' type drop links. Very substantial.

Back on thread ( ish) I have a set of Negative camber eye bolts ( bottom Fulcrum joint) these are longer and can be spaced using thick washers or custom 'C' shaped spacer washers.

Still haven't looked under the front of the coupe to check the roll bar. I will sometime soon.

The coupe ran two different bars. K series and early L series ran the bar mentioned in this thread. This bar did not use drop links on it. It bolts directly to the lower arm just using a short rod. This is why the hole for mounting, is horizontal.

From the late L Series coupes, the front bar mounted with drop links and verical mounting holes.

Now one thought is this. The late 4000 Fwd used a 22mm bar verses the 20V or 4000Q 26mm bar. If you are getting too much tail wag from the 26mm bar, this 22 mm bar maybe an option. I would have to overlay them to determine if they have the same configuration.

                              Just a thought.

I am probably one of the few States guys on this forum that actually knows what a Minor is. Considering no factory imports into the states since the 60s. Maybe showing my age a little.

The european 20V, front wheel drive, front ARB does not fit - I have 2 sititing in the garage - has to be off the quattro.

It's the mounting points on the subframe - one side does not line up - the bar is at a angle where it would mount onto the subframe.
