  • Ur Quattro steering rack HELP!!!

    Hello,
I am hoping someone might be able to share a possible cause for my steering issue.

I have a 83 UR quattro with the stock 75 bar steering pump and steering rack. The steering rack has been rebuilt.

This issue I am having is the car steers well until i hit 5,500 rpm and after that the front end darts and it feels like there is no pressure to the steering wheel. I have to put very little input for any correction and it is a bit of handful.

    Any ideas ?

    Thanks

Could be the rack or the pump over pressurising. It would make sense to get the pump rebuilt and hope the rack is good.

Crasher.......agree 100% with what you are saying about over pressurizing. Since the rack has been rebuilt and way harder to remove, I think my next move is to send the power steering pump out for rebuild. I am curious if anyone else has had this issue.

You can buy rebuild kits and the single stage pump is very simple to rebuild.

Pretty sure the pipe from the pump has an in built restrictor. Are your pipes audi ones?

Yes, the maintenance book shows a relief valve and states “don’t remove”
The hoses are new / modified, but more or less the same diameter hose and lengths

I had the original ends put on new pipe and it didn't work.

That’s interesting that your new hoses created an issue with your steering. Unfortunately, with the 20v motor and radiator angle, I need a slightly longer hose for the high pressure side.
the shop that made the hoses used the same
ID of the oem hose for the new hose.

I got around it by buying a pipe for a different Audi, probably c4 v6. It was longer (i have 20v in ur). The end at the rack was different but that was easy to use the car's original end. I made a sleeve to join the metal parts of pipe together. Brazed it.

Just wondering if you’ve made any progress with your issue?

I have been traveling, so haven’t had a chance to go any further with the power steering issue. I think my first step will be replacing or rebuilding the power steering pump when I get back

I have rebuilt a few pumps using the Rennbay kit. These are state-side too.

Rebuilding is easy to do as long as you keep things organized and clean.
