What happens if i ditch the hydralic pump?

    Hey.

Im pretty sick of my hydralic pump acting up and such. i have no problem with the loss of the powersteering shouldnt be requierd really. Question is i have a nagging feeling that if i just pull away the pump and plug the hole in the steering rack the steering would be stiffer than runing it with no preassure? As in teh plug will resist my steering inputs. So how do i get rid of the hydralic pump and not get that drawback?

Regarding the brakes i do want power assisted brakes so how do i solve this issue then? Just fit a regular vacum powerd servo? From wich car could i get one of thoose and how do i fit it?

The car will be very hard to steer with out the power steering, try being towed with the engine off to see what I mean, vacuum servos dont work so good on a turbo car, you can fit an electric pump though. Or why not repair the system properly?

Well there is a pretty big difference with towing the car with the engine of and removing the servo totaly. There are plenty of cars wthout servos and they arent that heavy. ther in my theory that you cannot just plugg the hole for the hydralic fluid in the servo.

I wasnt thinking about using vacum servo for sterring just for brakes but i presume same holds true for this.

Regarding fixing it properly. Well i dont want it. So why should i fix it?
Lots better feel without servo assisted steering. Only thing that makes med not go unservod alltogehter is that i want Servo assisted brakes.

Hmm a couple of pics perhaps so you see how the car looks like atm.

As you can probably guess by the pics that thing about daily driver and streetable and such went out the window quite a long way back

      1. I want to keep it simple and having a hydralic pump failing every now and then isnt that tempting to me.
      2. It isnt like im taking it to the store everyday so i dont really care if its a bitch to paralel park So id rather have the better feeling that an uservoed rack gives

ohh yea btw the radiator is going in the rear thats why its dismanteld in the first pic.

Mmm, now thats proper hose clamps

You can definitely fit an electric pump to do the brakes, some of the guys who convert CQs to turbo spec actually use the Vac servo but that scares me, if the one way valve goes and you end up sending boost to the braking system.. Of course you could fit a vac pump to the servo like on a diesel, maybe?

It would make sense to me that the in and output from the rack should be connected together, so the oil can flow, but I'm just guessing.

I have done same modification at my car (85 CQ) with vacuum servo. I have 2 one way valves and an vacuum acumulator. I dont know if the vacuum servo unit will fit your car. About the pump you have to remove the 2 pistons and springs from the high pressure side. If you plug that hole the pump will explode. I have done same mistake.
                Now is working fine.
                Hope this helps.

The ideea with electric pump is nice. Never thinking at that . Somebody has done this? Some pictures or specs for the pump?

Connecting one end to the other end will either blow the seals, or run with a vaccume which will cause the steering to pull one way all the time e.g.

Thanks Graham for the proper technical answer
(I did say I was guessing, a dangerous thing to do with hydraulics, eh?)
Right so if connecting the 2 ends together will blow the seals, as Pirvu says you'll have to remove the piston and seals, how do you lube the rack then though? seal it with the fluid in it? Or strip it, remove piston and seals and grease it then block the holes?

For rack lubrication you could just plumb both ends of the rack into the reservoir then it will just use the rack like a pump circulating it from one end into the reservoir then into the other end, while one is sucking the other will be blowing.

You could just vent both to atmosphere, add a foot long length of tube above the rack with some sort of breather/filter on the end. If its only displacing air it shouldnt be a problem, and any residual fluid left over in there will lubricate the seals.

Whay You dont buy an second hand rack with no power steering I have one if interested but I think the transport is 3 times more than one new.

If your refering to the PAS pump then yes it can be replaced with an MR2 electric pump.

Details are on motorgeek in Javad's thread and also Corey has done this in his project thread in the quattronics section.
