There's been a couple of cases of the bracket on the steering rack being cracked where the track rods join on. Difficult to spot. Or the rack moving on its mounts.
Why not skim 2mm off your mounts so you have a small chamfer in the inside corner and try that. If the subfame can move forwards and backwards it will tug on the trackrods and change the tow.Comment

which bracket on the rack? the one with the 2 studs on that goes thru the back and is a right pita! if not which one you on about?
could explain alot as i did change the rack about a year and a half ago! but still confused on how the rear is moving!
anyone know the correct torque setting for the rack bolts? couldnt find any doc on it so used a bit of the old 'FT'!!
bit lost? which bit do you mean? the inside of the tophat?Comment

Have a look in each wheel arch at the steering arms thru the holes whilst a mate moves the steering wheel and see how much movement you have.
IIRC the bracket you mentioned above is the two bolt ones that hold both steering arms onto the rack and this car bend unfortunately.
Also I know its a long shot but check both front wishbones are the same, I had one forged and one pressed on mine which made it crab.Comment

both fronts are forged and both rears are pressed! theres no real play in the rack either! even after the crash
! although i cant really do a 'fair' test with struts and wheels on
passenger and drivers side track rods had only covered about 2k miles at the time of the problem, the passenger one is still good, replaced drivers side last weekend as it was just a twisted bit of metal

The inside corner of the tophat, so that as they bolt up the chamfer bears on the edge of the hole in the subframe.
Its the bracket Acidburn described.Comment

Bent shock rod will do it too.
You set the geometry then go for a drive the rod revolves and changes the tow and camber. You can check this, put a spanner on the nut above the topmount and turn it, see if anything moves.Last edited by newsh; 11 November 2007, 12:43.Comment

i'll give the chamfered edge a go, taking 2mm off of each one won't hurt will it?
shocks were < 2k miles old at the time, and believe it or not! the drivers side one is still straight as far as i know! (not lathed, just used a VHG with cotton bud and eng blue) only bent the dish on top of the turret!
not tested the pass one tho! as with the bracket, its a 2 piece jobby? do you mean the bit with the 2 bolt holes in cracks or gets bent? or the one with the 2 studs in?, surely you'd have to bend both or it wouldnt fit back together would it?
