Miracles do happen - in threes apparently

Started into some long awaited tasks tonite and am amazed to report the miraculous removal without damage, bloodshed or large percussive instruments of the following items which have always given me jip on other cars... This stuff is ~14yr old and never been off before. In preparation for new front wheel bearings.

1 - The silly lil bolts and front disc splash shield - WD40 some patience and a nice tight 10mm socket with a bar just the right size

2 - Front ABS sensor - lots of WD40 again, tick tock and *gently* levered it out with a 2-pin fork. Did tap the housing 1st of all to loosen with a hammer & drift though.

3 - Bottom balljoint on front wishbone. This surprise me the most... Loosened the wishbone bolts at the subframe to release tension. Removed the bottom joint nut and bolt and with a larger 2-pin fork was able to lever it out gently without damaging the rubber. Also tapped that housing with the drift to persuade the thing out. Turns out the joint is well tired so thats more parts for Santa to bring. If it had been a healthy part I would have ripped the rubber of course.

    Well impressed though.

Some stuff does surprise you like that.

The 20v that I broke recently everything came apart no problem abs sensors etc only thing that gave a bit of a fight was the top cross screw that held on the passenger side wing.

Well - the other side was not so good.... Had to hacksaw off one of the brake lines but the real pain was the ABS sensor - it was starting to move then the casing just disintegrated. PITA - its connectorised up near the airbox which aint so bad - its just the price of the damm thing that is depressing.

I discovered both outer CV boots are just about to split and the bottom joints are well past their best. The FARB links and top mounts are somewhat tired as well. So I figure on melting more plastic to renew all the joints and spruce everything up at the front. Gonna take the plunge on Powerflex bushes for the wishbones too.

Given the wait for parts now over the hols I may even have an opportunity to paint some items and make the car feel loved for once

Took about 2 hours to strip the drivers side front corner completely - I reckon it could be done in 20-30 minutes if none of the fittings were rusted and seized.

Oh gotta post an update about 996monblock conversion b4 I forget...

            Paul,

I'm going through the same saga with my brake lines at the moment, the majority of them have had to be removed with a hacksaw instead of a spanner but this sight has cheered me up no end

Good luck with all the jobs and look forward to seeing those stoppers installed!

I've always found it easier to leave the ABS sensor in place and disconnect the wiring.

Pulling the wiring through the wheel arch takes 2mins - it's only held in place with 1 screw.

Actually - hindsight is wonderful and I would also recommend that suggestion. Guess I was lucky with one side. I think you'd need to remove the water bottle to access the connector for left side and the airbox to get at the connector for the right. At 100 quid sticker price on new ones it would be worth the extra time alright.

                    Hi Paul,

Yes, LHS you need to MOVE the coolant reservoir, not REMOVE it. No fluid need be spilt! Undo the retaining screws and gently move to one side. You can get to the connector from there... BTDT

                    Cheers,

                    Steve.
