You have to hold the shock rod still with an allen key while you tighten the nut. the top cup will stay still then.

When you fit aftermarket shocks they should come supplied with spacers so they fill the leg and the cap tightens down on them, sometimes they are not supplied though.
The sleeve nut with the slots in it must be tightened up before the nut goes on, but it sounds like yours is tight otherwise the top cup wouldn't try to go round.Comment

My car supposedly has RS2 suspension wether thats springs and shocks or one or the other i'm not sure.
I think i might have RS2 shocks but S2 springs so the springs are slightly too long for the shock would that be why my springs keep popping out ?
S2 avant/RS2 front and rear spring are the same, the difference between S2 avant/RS2 suspension is damping rates and anti-role bar diameterLast edited by slow2; 2 January 2008, 02:40.Dez

Urgh, this is doing my head in now.
Done all mentioned.I think I may have ballsed up though.
OK,I ordered P/No. 45572 Sachs Boge shocks from GSF and thats what went in.
One thing I didnt mention is that mine was specced with Sports Suspension at the factory.
I didnt mention this when I got my shocks.
So,if I havent stated its Sports Suspension,I have the wrong shocks right??
Theyve been in miles and months now.Im more angry than a bull in a red building!
Thx guys so far.It all matters huh?!

Chances are you have been given the std dampers and they are too long for the springs and you will always have play- check old and new damper lengths then cry!!Urgh, this is doing my head in now.

Thx man! They differed a little.
Oh well, the end is now in sight.
I now need some S2 shocks I think.Would like some improvement after all this muppetry by me.
Im not sure if anyone here has any for sale,to save buying more new ones.
Could ya PM me if you have a pair of front Sports Suspension or S2 shocks to sell, assuming theyre not one in the same thing.
Thx everybody for all your help!

Ah yep,found that one out!
Well,here endeth the tale.
I got onto Vagparts and got the blue Boge shocks for cars with factory sports suspension.I got a new set of top mounts, blue.Whacked a new set of track rod ends on while I was there but thats by the by.
Arrrrgh!!!The shocks are the same 'kin length!!!But,the top mounts were newish but well squished.I began to smile then!
Buttoned it all up,and there was still a few mm gap!Ebay then sprang to mind-to sell the cocking thing!!
But,after I did em up on the top turret the gap disappeared to no more than 3mm.
Im going to leave her there.I now know my way around the front end of Coupe suspension pretty damned well!
Thanks everyone for your help
I'll start keeping a book on how many days it takes for these blue muddy funsters to squash up and the rattle to come back!

how are you getting on with this Steve? Is it all back to normal still?
I think i've got the same problem, although i'm running Koni dampers.
I replaced wishbones, top mounts and track rods but i've got a slightly different knocking noise..... but still the gap at the top of the strut problem..
What actually casued your problem ? as it sounds like the shock inserts were ok in the end? Or did you need to use the Spacers that Jamil & Si suggested?
I'm thinking likely that my strut caps need tightening down probably.
cheers

I went up to Steve's last week, i think now he is just being OCD about it. The gap is maybe 2mm at best. Not sure what caused it before, but I have a gap on mine which I didn't have before I replaced the front shocks with Bilsteins (not shortened length). I don't have any knocking or anything like that though...

mine is not a knocking per sais, its more of a metallic twang when i apply lock, weirdly it is most noticeable when turning lock to lock when stationary. I can feel a point where it knocks if i jiggle the wheel side to side
I thought it mgiht eb the rack was loose or something, but since i have replaced the wishbones, track rods, ball joints and top mounts i figure it must be a strut / insert related issue
the twang noise i get sounds as if the spring is being tensioned torsionally and slipping slightly on the spring cup....
the ride in my car is not bad at all to be honest, just this odd knock / twang when steering lock is applied, and a bit of noise as the top mounts / cups don't seem to be seated properly
I think i will remove both struts this weekend and see if i can see what the problem is.Panthero Coupé quattro 20vt
