Whats wrong with a grinder? Loads of noise sparks and its off, and unlike a puller it can be used for lots of other jobs too! Tiling, lightening and removal of wheel clamps

I love these threads. It always throws up loads and loads of ideas.

I haven't got a suggestion of my own, but would probably try the grinding / cutting of bearing housing method. You won't need to go right through for the "interference" fit to loosen.

bearings tend to split open a bit before you get right through. so damage to the shaft/hud can be avoided

Grinder is certainly the best option here. Done them like that myself.
The problem with most garage mechanics these days is that they all know how to remove a part from a car, chuck it in the bin and get a shiny new one out of a box and bolt it on. They can't repair or do anything more technical than that.
We then end up paying upwards of £60hr for these dimwits.
There are two little cut-outs on the wheel flange to enable the arms of a puller to get in there, but it needs to be very thin to fit.

When i did my bearing last year that part of the bearing thats stuck on the hub i managed to tap a chisle in behind it then when it moved just tapped it off

The problem i had when i was doing my bearing was that the bearing really didnt wanna come out. we had are big hydrlic press wound right up and still wouldt move was waiting for the hub carrier to brake, i got a bit of heat into it and left the pressure on and when for a cup of tea till i heard a satifiying bang and it poped out

                Paul:
I second the chisel idea, which is made somewhat easier if you have a compressed air chisel/hammer - work your way around the hub and drive the bearing shell off.

They are done now... I helped my brother-in-law with one last night. Sure enough that outer edge stays with the hub when you push it out. We just prised that off with a pry-bar as there are two mighty useful tabs in the hub for that - no grinders or pullers required. A fair bit of hammering with a mighty mallet and drift pushed the remains of bearing out and we were able to get the new bearing in on one side with a vice most of the way.

He used a press at his workplace to finish them off.

I put some pics together to explain this, but its best I post that in a separate top-tips thread. So the only good thing this idiot mechanic has done is that he forced me to learn something new and see the internals of the front hub assembly which can be shared here.

Link to sticky thread here - probably best you had any more useful photos to that one. Please note the size of any drifts used on the press - though I guess you would just use old outer casing as the basis of drift for pressing in the new one.
