    Shock-Spring Compatibility issue. H+R-Koni

Just finished fitting my S2 coupe H&R spring kit to my converted CQ ABY.

I just used the existing Koni adjustable shocks that were only fitted 2 years ago.
The fronts fit fine, but it appears that the rear Shocks are too long. On full extension of the shock. The spring dislocates.

From what i can tell, when i removed the CQ lowering springs (came with the koni kit) they were doing the same, as the spring was no longer seated properly.

Not really happy with this, as any airtime/shock full extension on the 'ring could dislocate my spring

Is this normal with the H&R Spring - Koni Damper setup? Do i need Koni S2 rear shocks? Does anybody have any knocking around?

The stance and ride are awesome BTW!!

not 100% sure here and someone will surely correct me but I think you need to run with a shorter shock. I know the bilsteins i use with my H&R's are shorter than the stock boge units....

As you say, you don't was a spring floating about in there whilst on the Ring. After a hairy moment with Mr Casey last october when the wheel bolts worked loose mid corner, can assure you its not good for the heart

Springs are right for the S2, shocks are for a CQ so that might be the issue as the S2 is already lowered on the stock suspension over the CQ so a further 30mm drop could be the issue.

Rear suspension is the same for CQ and S2, for the 20v version anyway. I'm using a Koni/H&R combo and didnt have any of the issues you mentioned. The front struts need a little tweak as the spring perchs on the S2 are ~5mm wider. If you dont they hit the edge on full compression, basically if you hear a clank noise over speed ramps you need to file the lip off them.

Yeah, my rear suspension is identical to 20v, being originally a 1990 2.3E the majority of the drivetrain is identical.

I think that maybe i was supplied with the incorrect rear shocks in the Koni SSK kit. As the springs from the "matched kit" appeared to have dislodged when i came to remove the springs to replace with H&R.
I may have to do some investigating, and remove the rear shock insert to find the part number and find out whether it is correct. I may find i have a front insert or something. I dont think i will get a chance to do so before i got to the nurburgring This coming month.

Im going to put up a wanted ad for some shocks/legs or whatever. i think various combinations will solve this scenario. I just need it to be cheap and good.

                  Thanks for your help guys.

Partially solved the problem, well, not solved but found the cause.

I think these are the shocks that i have:

Listed for 2.2E and 2.3E Coupe Quattro. (and others)

These are the ones i need:

                    Listed for Quattro 2.3E, 2.3 20v and s2.

I think i should have had the bottom ones as part of my kit anyway as the shocks appear too long for my old springs that came in the kit. But i bought them 2 years ago now so there aint much i can do about it. Might just save up and buy the bottom ones. Im assuming its £150 for a pair!!

The 2086 sport is the UR quattro front one, this is longer piston. This shox is used also at the rear of the coupe quattro type 85 and also at the rear of the 80/90 quattro excluding 20v. These are used in this application due the higher ride of the standard car.

The 20v and S2 as you rightly mentioned is 2433.

Looking at the retail price (less the 7% discount) that they quote I would think is each plus vat added. If that is the case they are not cheap.
                          They are cheaper elsewhere.
