    Shocks and springs

    Hi guys,

Know it has been spoken about many times before but I can't decide on the setup for the car, shortly in need of an overhaul and the front pass side shock is leaking. So the question is to improve the handling but not too far as to make it a bone breaker as I do long journeys in it.

    SO thought is

RS2 shocks all round with H&R spings.

    Opinions please....

    Cheers

just done mine mate. worried about the ride myself.

i got solid alloy subframe bushes, poly arm bushes, the expensive top mounts, cant remember the name, koni shocks, koni springs (old as hr sent the wrong ones) new balljoints and roll bar on the back (whiteline) with new roll bar bushes up front.

the ride is excellent. a lot less roll but not harsh at all. its about the same as a brand new A4 sline. no noise from anything better turn-in etc.

id look at tightening the chassis and using a less stiff suspension setup like i did. i was gonna go coilover like i had on my past cars and now im glad i didn't. the difference is night and day between the coilovered golf i was driving before i got the s2 back on the road.

Apparently there is a back order on koni shocks ( Info from RS2jay ) although some can be found on ebay for the Avant.

RS2 shocks and H&R springs would be my vote if you can't source Koni's

just been told by supplier that i have the top spec promount the motorsport ms2 variant if that helps. they are great.

ive used bonrath blues in the past, vag standard and cheapo GSF/ECP ones. id say either get the best or get the worst and replace them every year.

i would never buy the OEM RS2 shocks again.Had them on my car for 20000Kms,and took them off for bilsteins. All 4 of them were sipping oil and were low on compression. Not very satisfied with them.
S2 and RS2 avant have the same configuration,so bilsteins would be my only choise

                          Just a thought for you...

If you want the car to handle well but be comfortable, you could do with using a softer shock with some stiffer springs, not the other way around. i.e. standard, or something close to standard for shocks would be fine with some koni springs.

bilstein shocks are just a tad stiffer than the OEM ones. For me its a choice to go for lowering options as well.
I never had any experience with Konis, only that they work in reverse due to their configuration which makes the car soft if you hit a bump, and toughest if you hit a hole on the road...something like that at least...

by the way, bilsteins are fully refurbable which means that you can get away with chaning flanges and oil and having them again!

Sounds like bilsteins are a perfect choice then

I'm still running standard shocks on mine, seems to work fine but i probably should replace them with something a bit more suited.
