    Check your track rods!

Failed MOT the other day on a couple of issues (rear discs, no brake assistance ) But the worrying thing was that one of the track rod end lock nuts was loose, chatting with a man who knows his stuff this is actually not all that unusual on the 2 due to the design of the track rod, the taper wears and the nut goes loose. (Nothing to do with my driving then ) You could actually wobble the rod adjuster up and down 3 mins with a spanner sorted it out but I'm tempted to get the alignment checked again.

I've never heard of that before

Is this the nut on the rod that goes through the steering arm or the nut on the adjuster side?

Think he means the nut that is on the shock end, I had this come off on mine and I was seriously lucky I felt the vibration and slowed down, hence i've now double nutted that so it can't come off.

this is why they are lock nuts and should be used once only and torqued correctly

Yup. Replace them! I also use a clamp to press the ball joint into the socket fully when tightening otherwise tehy can spin out too easily.
