    Track rod end spring clips

Has anybody got any good tips for replacing the spiral spring clips that hold the track rod end boots in place, before one of the following happens:-

    1. The spring clip cuts the rubber boot
    2. I stab myself in the hand with a screwdriver
    3. The track rod end gets launched through the nearest window when I loose the plot after trying to get the little bas***d on for the 50th time

    Thanks

    .

A vice and 2 thin nosed pliers...think i refurbed one along time ago...feel your pain.

Might work with a thin walled tube holding the clip open and sliding it over the end, then dropping the clip into place...

I looked at trying to do it and split the boot with the pliers, much easier to just get new ones, and if you already have them off the car easy to replace as well! BUT if they are seized on the ajuster a major PITA. They are cheap only 8 quid i think from the stealers.

If it were a front track rod, I'd just replace it, but these are on the rear and they are £90ea. Nothing wrong with the that a good soak in derv and some new boots didn't cure.
Like the idea of the thin wall tube, I'll give it a try, cheers Carlos.

You could probably wrap a bit of shim or oil can around it and slide the ring on. (shame oil usually comes in plastic these days.. )

Andy I had the same problem when refurbing my rear ones and used one of the retaining clips off a front track rod boot, they are different and easier to get on with the aid of a blunt screwdriver, but still approx the same size - HTH
