    Cheers

I've looked at the boot (as the noise sounds sort of rubbery) and it looks fine but nothing to lose by lubricating it. I've got some pure siliocne spray I'll try that and report back.

Hhmmmm.........lubicated the boot but still makes the noise I'm now convinced it is something internal can't find any play in the wheel bearing so is it the CV joint?

      Any ideas yet Martyn?

        Leigh ,

I'm leaning toward the fact that it must be a wheel bearing. There is nothing physically rubbing on mine, nothing is touching ie the disc splash shield etc so that only leaves one thing that could possibly make a rubbing noise, the wheel bearing. A CV joint wouldn't make that kinda noise.

I think it's gotta be the bearings Leigh.. :-(

****** typical . I guess as it is the cheaper of the 2 options it will have to be the bearing first.

Is there actually any play in your bearing 'cause mine seems rock solid. Maybe its pitted or corroded or something.

Can you get the bearing only or does it come with the housing?

Next thing to find out is how to actually replace it and what torques to use. Maybe a vist to Erwin is in order

          Cheers

:-) the part maybe cheaper but I don't have the tools needed to change a bearing :-( it's a big mother hubbard!! and you need to press the old one out and new one in :-( that means removing the leg from the car!! that's way beyond my means I don't have a press...

There's no play in mine that I can feel, so I guess that means pitted or dry, just worn out I guess... The power steering pump was changed on mine today and I need to fit a new ECU vacuum pipe tomorrow, so I'll whip the wheel totally off tomorrow and 'feel' any problems by rotating the hub, see if I can generate the noise by hand.

Then I'll fit a new heater blower motor, adjust the drivers door up a little, change the wiper arms, fit new rear wishbone bushes, new rear brake flexi lines, align the headlamps, fit the Samco hoses ( I wish.. not in yet), fit two new rear door triggers, two new washer jets, polish the rocker cover, clean the inlet manifold, replace the accelerator cable, degrease the engine from all the anti freeze when the top hose split, fit a new set of plugs, fit a boost gauge, put new bulbs into the heated seat switches and front fog light switch, take the front seats out and swap them around, refit the glovebox, adjust the bonnet stops, fit a new bonnet grille, replace my top left top mount and that'll do for another normal S2 weekend!!

But you wouldn't have it any other way

****, I didn't realise you have to press it out! Looking at ETKA it seems you could remove the bearing housing from the suspension leg and do it that way, rather than removing the whole leg. A mate of mine has a bearing puller, not sure if I could use that?

Can you atually buy just a bearing? ETKA gives 893 498 625 E as the 'bearing with mounting parts ' which seems to include the hub?

Does anyone have all the dimensions of the bearing? By this I mean ID, OD (82mm) and depth, roller or ball etc. As in Sheffield there are stacks of cheap bearing suppliers. I'm guessing the S2 was built around standard bearings and didn't use anything weird and wonderful

Finally can you actually rotate the hub by hand when all the other wheels are on the ground and the car it out of gear? I'm guessing there won't be as much (if any noise) without the maasive weight of the car on it

Bearing replacement is easy. Just take off the hub and remove the disc and calliper etc. Get your local friendly garage to press the hub part out. Then remove circlip and press out the bearing. Clean up bearing 'hole' and press new one in. Make sure you put it in the right way as it is stepped inside. Then press the old hub back in and hey presto, job done. Any garage can do this if they have a press and skilled staff. It takes about 20 mins to press out and back in. I used a non-genuine part and it came with new cv bolt and circlips to hold the bearing in place. I think it cost about £25 quid. If you buy non-genuine, make sure its the right one as i had hassle with many suppliers listing the wrong item for the S2.

                  Tom

So the bearing is pressed onto the hub and not the bearing housing (which is attached to the suspension arm)?

Any idea of the size and torque setting for the big nut on the hub?

                  Cheers

Just finished work in a pub!!

The bearing is pressed into the bearing housing and then circliped in to stop it going anywhere (like thats gonna come out)

Then the bit that the disc and wheel sits on is then pressed into the bearing! You will never do it at home. Needs about 5-7 tonnes!! to move the bearing. Sometimes even 10+. That big nut is FT. Its something stupid like 115Nm then 180 degrees. Thats tight, bring out the scaffolding bars

So I have to take off the hub and the bearing carrier as one oh well.

Just checked and GFS do a bearing kit for the S2 at £26.80 + VAT. Not sure what constiutes a kit I'll have to ask them.

115Nm aint that bad, the carried bolts for the caliper are 125Nm I seem to remember :eek2:.

Anyway cheers for the advice I might get in touch before I do it to make sure I'm doing the right stuff.

Sounds very similar to mine driver's side front(!). It started a couple of days ago as a squeak as the car was moving, like somehting catching as the wheels turned. But mine seemed to disappear when breaking.

Squeak is still there but seems louder and seems to increase when going right. It now sounds a little more 'metallic' than plastic or rubbery. Nothing I can see or feel is rubbing anywhere. I had the gaiter and bearings changed on that side a couple of months back so it could be likned to that.

It going to AmD for its annual service and MOT next week so I'll ask them to look at it.
