    Front Subframe Issue???

I have just replaced the front subrame on my car and now have a problem with the downpipe catching on it.

I did notice that when I compared it to my old one that there were additional strengthening gussets on the upper corners. I assumed this was a design improvment, but it appears I now have a problem as the clearance between the downpipe and subframe is about 3mm!

It knocks and vibrates under heavy throttle and when turning left.

Can anyone shed an light on the various models of subframe out there?

I think I am going to have to drop it again and grind the offending area out. I have all brand new engine mounts and gearbox mounts so I don't *think* it is anything else.

    Thanks,

    Steve

Peter reckons it might be a V6 one! I did notice the difference before fitting but thought it was an upgrade! (Don't know why I am laughing)

I'm sure it was a v6 subframe from the green v6 coupe I broke a while ago. From what i've seen/read on this forum I thought they was a straight swap for an aby one. I've got one on my urq as well and same with Jamo on his avant.

Bit wierd as i've not heard any comments of people having problems

Having said all that, apart from the rubbing downpipe, the car feel bloody amazing. The supaflex subframe bushes and powerflex wishbone bushes have transformed the handling. It is direct and supple but firm and controlled. The car tracks straight and true and does not seem to wander at all. The Recaro's have added another level of involvment, you sit lower and are hugged at the waist and shoulders so that you feel like are at one with the car.

If I can just drop the subframe with wishbones attached, (8 bolts) I can grind the offending area away repaint that area again and put it back up. An easy weekends work....

              Oh pics...

Highlights in pics show additional gusseting over standard ABY subframe.

No blame on your behalf, I should have been more circumspect before fitting it. I still have the old as a worse case scenario.

wonder if its possible to indent that section to give a bit more clearance. Really is a wierd one this, i'll have a look at my subframe and see if that has anything extra on it.

IIRC the material is quite thick, I did think about just hitting it with a large hammer, but I dont think that will do it. I estimate I need about 10 - 15mm of clearance for it to be safe an not touch. I can still go back to my old one, but it needs a serious refurb.

i'm almost sure atm i've not got another spare subframe otherwise i'd have brought that down, i've only got 5 speeds spare atm.

Wonder if this is shown in etka at all as i've not heard of any with extra material, maybe mark might know something more?

Let's wait to see if the late evening or morning crew have anything to offer. My only other reservation about grinding some material away is that my MOT man might not like me modifying structural members, even if there is more material still there than the original one.

I am now leaning towards refurbing the original and swapping over again....

The V6 subframe changed at chassis 8B-N-014501. Is it possible the V6 one you have is from before the change

How about a 3mm washer under the engine mount on that side?
