    procon ten question(s)?

When t'he procon ten system is activated t'he big cable pulls t'he steering wheel etc into the footwell / dash.

Does anybody know which specific part is designed to break thus allowing the column to be pulled downwards. I've had a quick look and the pressed metal part above the steering column that accepts 2 horizontal bolts looks like the weak point.

I'll take a few pictures later.

Is it called proconten, procon ten, pro con ten or pro-con 10?

    I thinks its 'Procon-ten' (Programmed Contraction-Tension)

    Cheers

Id be interested in seeing a car after its been activated.

From what I remember there is a bellowed section in the steering column, just below the aluminium section to which the cable attached. I assume the part that collapses is in there.

I think you're correct, i'd like to be certain which part exactly is designed to break in the event that the steering wheel is being pulled forward. I'm trying to figure out a steering column mod and wouldn't like to change the operation of t'he PCT.

If anybody sees a crashed 80 and would like to take some pics of the fractured part I'd like to see 'em please.

I'll get some pics of the column during the week.

and what about disadvantages of procon ten

The steering wheel becomes by the steel cable, which lies around engine mount and transmission with the same speed in the instrument panel pulled, as the impact actually lasts. That is usually only few milliseconds. The engine mount takes likewise in the speed the new position, like the steering wheel. The entire forces, which affect the engine mount, are thus transferred over the steel cable in negative direction to the steering wheel. Thus can within few milliseconds several Kilo Newton on the steering wheel pull, which can have fatal consequences:

With more largely built humans the knees can in the case of an impact, if the steering wheel is pulled jerkily into the instrument panel is hurt. In particularly heavy cases of an impact with more than at that time the usually tested 30 to 45km/h the floor space of the driver is strongly made smaller during a Frontabdeckung of 40%. When inserting Procon to ten it can come with humans, who are larger than 1,80m, by snapping back the steering wheel and the additional reduction of the floor space, quite to heavy injuries. In the worst case the possibility of the rubble break of the knees and Unterschenkel Fahrers.Auch exists the concept of this reason after introduction of the Airbags was not continued to pursue. Today no more new vehicles are equipped with this technology.

In other words, PCT can in some instances be dangerous.

                What are "Unterschenkel Fahrers"?

It's a case of the original system being outdated but removing it is not necessarily an improvement.

I'd take a broken knee rather than a smashed face given the option. I would like to modify the column to make more space for tall people.

No problem. Will you ask if anybody has photos of a collapsed steering column as a result of an activated PCT, I really want to know which part(s) are designed to give way.

                          I'll get better photos tomorrow.

Not sure about the pleasure part but the corrugated section is the part that will collapse during ProCon-Ten activation.
