    Steering Rack Banjo Bolts...which ones?

Just fitting powersteering lines and not sure which banjo bolt to use where as one is a none return type.

should it be on the hose to the fluid reservoir or the other one? my guess is the reservoir hose...

    cheers

nope the non-return banjo goes on the line into the rack from the pump mate.
If you fit two non-return banjos as per the FA the steering locks as the fluid flow out of the rack - BTDT.
The one on the return to the reservoir is just a normal banjo

Just run into this problem myself, although I didn't realise they were different until the one with the valve cracked whilst I was tightening it up. Does anyone have the torque settings for these bolts as that banjo bolt was no where near tight when it cracked.

Both the expansion and return hose banjos are tightened to 40Nm.

Can you tell which banjo is which by looking at them on the car?

I don't think so, its not until I looked inside the bolt I noticed that it had a valve inside.

I have a new one way valve Tim if that could help you?
The two banjos are outwardly identical, its only when you look at the open end you can see the valve inside.
                    40nm as above is correct

I don't know what the function is of this valve to be honest, only the RS2 and ABY had it from the factory according to the FA.

So the 3B shouldn't have had one anyway.. Ever since I changed the rack (to the ABY one) the pump has been knocking and also I can't stop it leaking, saw this topic and wondered if I'd got a one way banjo bolt in the wrong place meaning pressure is too high or something.. I think I put the original banjo bolts back where they came from but can't be sure, will have to look at the old rack and see if there are bolts in it.

I doubt its in wrong mate, if you put a one-way valve in the wrong hose in the return to the reservoir as soon as you fire the engine up the rack cranks right over to the passenger side and locks there while you're scratching your head the pump overheats in about 20 seconds and starts rattling like **** meanwhile fluid pisses out of the seal between the pump body casings. Wonder how I know this?

                            fair enough!

I still need to take the bolts out and clean the wee filters though anyway..
