Been searching the forum for a while, but cannot find a definitive answer...
What would be the issue with fitting an ABY PS pump to a 3B?
The car already has an ABY rack fitted...
What could go wrong?

I asked my friendly parts person and she says that the 3B and ABY both use the same tandem vane PS pump, i.e. 034145165 X up to L006900 and then 054145165GX from L006901 to L030000. After that, i.e after M00001, it was 8G0145165 X. The real difference is the 3B and ABY use different v-belt pulleys, i.e. 3B = 035145255E (also 7A and NM) whereas the ABY pulley is 034145255.
Here is some PS pump info (intended for AAN owners but might be useful anyway):

ADU/ABY/AAN/3B and even 1.8 four cylinders of the late Audi Cabriolet have the same pump.
Pulleys could be different
Does the 80 2.6 have the same pump as the S2 ABY as i need a pump on my ABY and someone is selling one off a 2.6 the part number from that pump is GO145165
