Apologies for the thread resurrection from over 12 years ago. Is the correct Audi RS2 UK RHD steering rack part number still 896422065B or is it now 896422065BX ? I saw a large puddle of what looks like green mineral PAS fluid under my car recently and I think it may be from the steering rack (it had been weeping for a while and I heard a strange noise when I last parked the car, reversing slowly on full lock). Since the part has been NLA for many years, please can someone recommend / suggest somewhere to get my 29+ year old Audi RS2 UK RHD steering rack refurbished in the UK to a very high (as new) standard? Thank you very much

Thank you, rxl but that is a lot more expensive than I had expected. Also, I cannot order directly from Audi Tradition as I am in the UK.

Thank you, John - it looks like http://propowersteering.co.uk/ is a good option.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions of where to get my Audi RS2 UK RHD steering rack refurbished?

          Many thanks

My friend had his Audi 80 tdi rack done at Western Power Steering in Bristol and seems good a couple of years later.

I had a green puddle too and that horrible noise on full lock reversing into the garage and it turned out to be the high pressure hose from the power steering pump. Just my tuppence for what it’s worth, presumably you can see the leak on the steering rack?

Thank you, Tractor Dave. I will contact both Western Power Steering and ProPowerSteering.

Thank you, 4WDrifter. A high pressure hose (895612065B) was replaced with a new one from Audi Tradition in early 2016 when my RS2 had a problem that turned out to be the high pressure (brake) side of the tandem vane pump. I thought that high pressure circuit / hose (895612065B) was for the brake side of the tandem vane pump (brake side of tandem vane pump to brake bomb?)? The tandem vane pump has been absolutely fine since Alex kindly rebuilt it in early 2016.
This time, I think the leak is on the power steering circuit. I thought that the power steering circuit was low pressure (or lower pressure than the brake circuit) but that is just from memory. Are you referring to a hose from the power steering side of the tandem vane pump to the steering rack? If so, do you have the part number for a UK RHD RS2 (is it 8A2422893E?)?

At this stage, I think I need to get my RS2 recovered to my mechanic (it is presumably not safe to drive it) so he can see exactly what and where the problem is. The steering rack had been weeping before this, whereas the braking has been fine. Hopefully the steering rack can be refurbished quickly and/or any relevant hose(s) purchased and replaced quickly so my car doesn't sit with the mechanic for too long and I can drive my car again soon.

If there are any other jobs that are worth doing on my car while the power steering rack is taken out / refurbished / put back, please let me know as I hope this will only happen once. Steering damper? Thank you

No worries Jon, we’re all on the same side on here, I was pretty sure you knew what you were doing but I know I’m always glad of a different viewpoint tossed into my situations. Good luck.

I know you're not me, but, if I were you I'd add some fluid to the reservoir and start it up to see if I could say for sure where the fluid is leaking from ? Maybe it only leaks on full lock??....if so you'd manage to drive it to your mechanic and maybe save money to put towards the rack overhaul ?!......maybe I'm over thinking it !!

Thanks both. No, I don't know what I am doing (no mechanical background) - just piecing things together from this helpful forum over the past couple of decades to try to figure it out.

John, the thing that puts me off doing that is the potential of breaking down on the (not so) "smart" motorway between me and my mechanic - or finding I lose power steering or the ability to depress the brake pedal on the tight bend or roundabout exiting that (not so) "smart" motorway. Not worth the risk.
