it is normal to have axial movement in the OE topmounts as they are not fixed to the strut tower. They should be a tight fit radially in the strut tower cup though which i think is where the 034 ones had problems

yeah this is orbital movement not axial. i know the up and down is normal, but side to side tells me something isn't right.

I have a horrible clunk from my top mounts even after replacing them twice. It is mainly from the driver's side and is most pronounced when going from reverse to forward but it can also do it when driving over a bump at very slow speed or going down hill slowly on the brakes. In any other driving condition it feels so tight and there is no sign of any play whatsoever. I have replaced every suspension bush on the car and the dampers I'm completely lost for ideas, I can't think it's anything other than the top mounts. Two MOT testers spent half an hour trying to locate the problem and couldn't. It has done it with genuine, Topran and Febi Bilstein top mounts. Is it really worth trying another make or is there something else I should try changing?

I'd suggest looking at your lower wishbone bushes and the wishbone bush bolt having play.

I've changed them, it made no difference. One of the reasons I suspect the top mounts is that I can see the movement is from the top of the strut and it also sounds like it is coming from that area. When I was looking at it with the MOT testers we could see the movement was from the strut top as the steering was moved from side to side. There isn't much play but but it makes a horrible noise. It is completely undetectable in any situation at any speed above about 5mph.

If you are crazy enough to spend 200 € for top mounts, you can try these: solid mounts with off-centered uniball bearing
                    no axial or orbital playing

I had a similar issue that drove absolutely mad for months, as you did I changed all the possible parts and eventually I found that..... the canister for the petrol vapours inside the right wing arch (nearside for you?) had lost the lower bolt
So on uneven surfaces small bumps etc it was bunging on the body producing exactly the noise you'd expect from a suspension matter....

What would this feel like on the track, lets say through a chicane?
If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.

I bought them from TS Motorsport in Germany. http://www.ts-motorsport.de

one big advantage: you can adjust the front suspension much better.
quite nice build quality, I think, they use them for some bergcup-cars as well.
of course not the softest setup, I would never use them for a daily driver.
they are a bit higher then the standard mounts, so the front will lift up a bit.
