    grinding/moaning steering at trackday?

    Hi all,

Did a few laps at the Nurburgring yesterday with the RS2, and after a couple of
km's something in the steering started moaning/grinding and even slightly knocking
    on heavy cornering.
Also when the track takes a dip during a corner and you get more compression (and thus more load on the car and it's steering system) it starts moaning even more, so obviously it can't cope with it. I didn't really loose assistance however.

On normal road driving I never encounter this, only heavy track-cornering after
a few km's when stuff got hot.

For those who have done some trackdays... sounds familiar? Steering rack could
cause this? Or is it just normal that these heavy cars can't cope with it

I replaced my pump a few months ago (overhauled ebay one however...)
so I'd be dissapointed if that'd be it. I've got 2 worn topmounts, but those aren't
    the noise.

yes also thought at that, boiling pas fluid... it's brand new however.

but do all S2/RS2 owners get this then after a few laps on the track?

No, not had an issue with the steering on track other than it tightening up a little under really hard cornering under full power in 2nd with the fronts scrabbling for grip.

Flush some fluid through it a few times. Did you use the correct tree mineral oil?

Could do that yes, and now you mention it... the last time when replacing an O-ring almost all the oil came out, and I topped it up with some non Audi (but green) oil. Maybe that is overheating indeed...

Nah don't think so. The first 4-5 hard corners were no problem, it clearly comes up after some time (and heat). On the road I've never had it, so it only comes up on very high stress cornering. It's that typical awful sounding pump moaning/drilling noise, and very loud.

I get this even on the road sometimes. The original cooler just isn't cut out for it. change the fluid after every trackday. I noticed once its boiled once it boils easier the next time around and the fluid on mine went v.dark. Can't be good.

                  Really?

I've done loads of track days over many years and have never managed to do this. Is it possible there is something else wrong?

If you change the fluid did you turn the wheel lock to lock with the top off the fluid resevior to get rid of all air?

Serious. First time it happened I thought id damaged the pump, it felt quite bad and was groaning like low fluid. Left it to sit for a while and it sorted itself out. Put it down to the pump cavitating. It always seems to be after hard cornering with acceleration if you push through the understeer into oversteer in 2nd.

Funny thing is I haven't had it happen on the road since running toyo proxes. Not been on track with them yet.

Turned lock to lock quite a few times. The steering doesnt feel right till the air is out so I spent a good while trying to clear it. maybe a few bubbles could remain unnoticed until pushed hard?

I remember a while back at mrc I spotted a black b5 rs4 with tinted windows with the bonnet up had a little finned small bore radiator in the pas circuit in front of the rad and mentioned it to doug who said the the owner had said he was having similar issues. But that was iirc over 500hp on what looked like 255 monstrous tyres.

nope - not had issues on track with mine before, even with a very tired, moaning pump it was still fine in use. I'd be looking for air, very small leaks or generally low fluid in the bottle. The flush and bleed fully...also check the tension of the belt to the pump, even it being a little slack will not help for sure.

Mine does the same moan on right handers and very hard braking but its not the steering.
The sump touches the crossmember... new engine mounts needed...

                              That's another thing then

I'm going to change the fluid this week. Is there any filter in the system that might cause anything? Something clearly can't cope with heat build-up, so I hope the fluid-theory makes sense in the end
