Can anyone enlighten me plse i have a loose steering colum it moves up and down when you move it from side to side and up and down and you can cleary see it movement just under the steering wheel, also when you brake from 50mph the whole colum judders violenty first i thought it was warped discs from bedding the new pads and discs in, then i found the movment in the colum. Are there any bolts in the upper part of the colum as that is where the movment is or is the colum knackerd.
I've got this currently. I ain't checked into it as I thought it was something else but there is 2x bolts at the top of the column that may well be this issue. I will let you know what I find when I check mine but may be a day or two.
Had a look today at the colum and doesn,t look good, when i took the steering wheel off as well as the clocks out to check the two bolts( which were tight ) i then took the 2 spring washers and then the spring from the colum and it seems that there is wear in the shaft at the top near the splines for the wheel im now wondering iff it is fixable or not, anybody else had this problem.
The bearing is not a replacement part according to the FA, but I'm sure it will be an off the shelf item from a bearing specialist.
Or you could just swap in a replacement column from someone breaking a car - probably cheaper that way!
Bad news is its probably a dash-out job to change it
Just had some brilliant news had an offer of a colum i can have for the cost of postage the dash is not that bad as i changed the matrix in my coupe last year only took me 5 days . this time 6 days no room in engine bay and hopefully .
No you pull it through the hole just enough to free it from the bottom spline, and then withdraw it down and out of the bottom. Its a good idea to take the two bolts out of the dash on the right first and pull it forward a touch to free the ignition barrel from the dash hole, and then you have to withdraw it from the right and out of the column. The bolt that holds the barrel in is a star bolt with a pin in the middle lucky i had a bit to take it out. Just need to do my sunroof seal now since i bought another motor and got it working this week the rain we had filled my car up and stained all the seats not looking forward to it dont know how much of a job its going to be.
Re the sun roof, make sure your drip tray is present and correct? On my avant it was missing and the water would sit up on the headlining and pour down when you put the brakes on. Soon as the drip tray was replaced it was all good. Have a look at the definitive water leak thread. and in particular this one http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...t=47518&page=2
just had a look at the thread i will check 2moz , the seal has come away from the roof at the back and it also has a gap between the two ends that meet. def need a new seal.
