It's tools and time David.... the age old problem of all mechanical repairs....

Tom posted a great set of photo's and advice a couple of weeks ago. It's not that difficult a job, but you'll need a tool big enough to undo the drive shaft bolt which *most* toolboxes don't have... I don't yet...

The cv is removed with a neat trick, using the old bolt to 'pop' the joint off the shaft, after the circlip is off!! have a look for toms post, he posted some great pictures.

hmmm, sure i can do this myself.

        Couple of questions:
        1) What grease do you repack the gaiter with and how much
        2) Do you undo the driveshaft bolt with the weight of the car on the ground and whats the torque up amount when tightening

        Cheers,

        David

          David,

The CV boot kit comes with the needed grease and circlips etc... plus a new shaft bolt. The shaft bolt *may* be either a normal bolt head (easy) or sometimes... you get a big Allen head bolt in the kit (hence tool needed which most people wouldn't have)

          Your questions:
          1) The stuff that comes with the boot kit. You use 40 grams into the CV joint and then 50 grams into the boot. Or in english, if the grease is a 100 gram tube stick nearly all of it in there!!

2)On the ground. The torque setting is 200nm and then 90 degrees.

My post is in the trans. section. The bolt on my shed was 27mm external hex. Just need a length of scaffold tubing to undo, with car on ground, handbrake on and someone pressing the brake pedal just to make sure.

Dead easy job. No offence to Martyn but i bought my CV boot kits from GSF, they are pukka GKN ones. cost about £20 each. Come with two packets of grease, i chucked the lot in.

Check my other post for details.

              CV Joint

              Martyn

What's the trick with popping the joint off with the bolt? Can't think of the exact design of the joint but is it that the bolt actually screws right through the joint and hits the driveshaft?
Maybe talking complete rubbish but can't picture the joint in my head.

              Thanks

              Alistair

Yeah thats it spot on. Just take the joint out of the hub and screw the bolt all the way into the end of the joint, just keep going until the joint is free.

It's simple David. Give me a shout if you need a hand. Did my NSF last year and OSF at Xmas. Easy job. Great trick with winding the bolt into release the CV...who's idea was that (haven't read this post yet)? Whoever it was, thank you very much as I didn't know it first time around!!
