The later cars didnt use the circlip. So there was never a groove.

Yes exactly, but as usual be careful pushing the hub into the bearing, support the inner part of the bearing from the other side, I destroyed one bearing this way

You probably know that already, but no harm mentioning it.

Yes, press in only. Mine were like this. Takes a few tons to press in, so it's fairly secure

When you press the new bearing in make sure you only apply force to the outer race of the bearing

C4 UrS Front Wheel Bearing info

Not sure if this applies to the S2s (or 2.3L CQs) but with the C4 UrS4/S6s, you have to be sure to get the correct wheel bearing. The incorrect C4 UrS wheel bearing has two inner parts, split 18 mm/18 mm with a 1 mm gap and the same inside diameter (45 mm IIRC). The correct C4 UrS wheel bearing has a split as well but it is 23 mm at 43 mm diameter and 13 mm at 45 mm diameter (with a 1 mm gap) (see photo)

Yes the S2/CQ20v front bearing is also stepped, in fact I am sure it is exactly the same

                    Okay, good to know.

So the stupid question of the day (not for you Error) *IS*:

Which way does the step go? Larger step diameter in or larger step diameter out?

(I know the answer - I just want people to think this through).

Larger diameter faces out. Paul N. wrote a nice guide here.

Correct. Otherwise, you can't get the hub pressed in properly without breaking the bearing.
