thank you for the pics, yes all the housings /valve housings are all tight , its item 28 thats rotating and from the pics the only way it can is if item 22 is too far away from it
my guess is that when they turn it into a "quick rack" they are replacing the pinion 22 with a smaller one allowing the space for movement/ rotation if that makes sence
just hope it cant jump a tooth??
    thanks

Actually it's the other way around - to make a "quick" rack, meaning less steering wheel turns lock-to-lock, the pinion needs to be larger.

I'd suggest trying to find out whether the turning is due to play in the rack or not. Unbolt the tierod bracket from the rack so nothing is connected to it (the rack) then try twisting it by hand. If you can turn it, it's just loose and possibly could be adjusted. If it can't rotate, but turns as you turn the steering wheel back and forth, it would indicate the actual rack (part #28) is machined improperly.

First thing to do is adjust the pre-load and see if that helps. If not the rack is fecked.

To adjust the preload, turn the 10 or 11mm hex head on the top of the rack when fitted - keep tightening it an 1/8th or a turn or so at a time until the steering doesn't self-centre, then back it off a touch. If that doesn't help, the rack is scrap IMHO.

At a guess the 034 rack and pinon might be straight cut rather than helical like OEM, allowing the rack to rotate with the pinion engaged.

ok the rack now has a clunk noise so , ive had the rack stripped and checked and there are marks on both rack and pinion. They have reassembled and the noise is less and still has some of the rotational removement as descride earlyer so . Ive lost confedence in the rack and wish to find another one
does anyone have a supplier for quick racks????
          thanks

Did you try adjusting the preload as described above?

yes thats the movement . The rack when the car is on the hoist and you grab/turn the tyre feels very notchie, you can feel teeth in the rack through tyre
The guys that do the work have adjusted preload but i havent as yet . Dont want to make things worse although it stuffed i may as well have a fiddle
