Right way up oem springs?

Having a blond moment so this might be very self explanatory if you know.
What is the correct orientation for the springs.I have read that the coloured spots should sit on the bottom of the strut and then read somewhere the flat part of the spring should sit at the bottom putting the spots at the top.
So which one is it??
Rebuilding my suspension this weekend so everything is coming off

I've done mine a few times and if you look closely one of the ends has a flat edge, this goes on the bottom end .
I once made the mistake of putting one in upside down and it knocked it's tats off !

well just went out and checked with the spare spring i have and having the flat bit on the bottom would put the coloured spots at the top of the spring,which is in fact the opposite way to they are now.
This might account for the knocking I have been trying to find for a long time
My mate a long time mechanic said they should go with the part nos the right way up

Yes spots towards the top, I recently unlowered mine and remember it being like this, mine does not knock at all

Right finished,all four shocks replaced (thanks to my wife for an early birthday present)with some billies.Springs now the right way round (I hope)
Avant rear suspension is so easy to remove and work on.Now for a test drive and hopefully no knocking but at least i will have improved handling-Now for a well deserved beer

Do these shocks settle in after a bit?,I have been told they even out after about two weeks of running the car.
The car itself is sitting a bit higher and yes I did do the spring perch mod on the rear and dropped it the recommended 20mm but looks a little higher than usual.I will wait till I give it a run.The beer came before test drive
