UrS6 - RHD Quick Rack - Who Wants One ? Read This Thread

Was in contact with Quaife Engineering about a RHD quick rack for a UrS6, as it is the one thing that is inferior on a C4 compared to an S2.

Please see their helpful reply pasted below.

If you look at their site, the quick rack are not that expensive as compared to an 034 LHD kit when it was avalable.

Quaife Engineering Ltd is a British manufacturer of automotive drivetrain products, specialising in performance transmissions, gearkits & differentials.

The demands of motorsport place a very different set of requirements upon a car’s steering than the original designers intended, which is why Quaife Engineering has produced a range of steering upgrades intended for motorsport use, inlcuding quick racks for saloon and single-seater applications.

    "Hello macspring,

Claire has passed your details on to me after your enquiry about a Audi steering rack kit.
Whilst we do not currently manufacture any steering rack kits for Audis, it is certainly something that we can look at if the demand was there.
Claire has explained our procedure for all new development work, so we would require a standard rack to be sent in to us for development.
We would then be able to quote you for the work and for manufacturing a batch of rack kits.
Should you decide to proceed with ordering a batch of rack kits we would require a 50% deposit to be paid before any development work takes place, with the balance to be paid upon completion prior to shipping.

Realistically our minimum batch size to be financially viable is 20 kits.

If you have any further questions or I can be of any assistance in the future please don't hesitate to contact me.

    Kind regards."

Who would be interested if the kits were less than £200.00 stg mark including vat. Obviously people would have to fit them themselves.

Any comments or suggestions, as a quick rack of say 2.6 turns lock to lock would be pretty cool for all RHD C4 cars.

Dave, is the one rack used for all types of RHD C4 cars, or is the S car rack different / unique ?

Alex, how hard is it to take apart and rebuild a steering rack from your work on the S2 rack ?

I hope you manage to get this going David, it's been my experience that most people are only willing to spend money on power or brake upgrades
I've never stripped a URS rack TBH, the hardest part about the S2 one is getting the end cap off the damb thing.
Have they given you a ball-park cost from them based on experience of developing other kits?
The reason I ask is that I feel £200 is unlikely to be a realistic figure, and you will get a lot of time wasters/dreamers unless you can lay your cards out in full.
Since you will need to have the pinion apart and a new shaft made for it, you should look into getting a stiffer torsion bar made up, which will reduce the steering assistance and increase feedback.

Depends. First of all, there are Servotronic and non-Servotronic racks. My NAmerica spec 93 UrS4 has a Servotronic rack ("1N3" code on the build tag). My 94 V8 S4 avant does not have Servotronic (code "1N1" on the build tag).

I would say that the Servontronic rack has a faster ratio than the non-Servotronic, at least it feels that way. Migtht be wrong.

LHD racks start with 4A1, RHD racks start with 4A2:

UrS4 (note several PN breaks - mostly lhd )

      http://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+100.../422-422040/#1

UrS6 (1995) (Note PN break at SN 075613 at least for lhd)

      http://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+a6+.../422-422040/#1

      UrS6 (1996):

      http://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+a6+.../422-422040/#1

All that said, for rhd Servotronic, it looks like 4A2422065AK has a wide cross-over, all the way back to C4 Audi 100s. Similar for the non-Servotronic rhd rack, 4A2422066 X. Again, no clue about the ratios involved.

If it wasn't for that I would be interested. I have a few spare a100 and c4 a6 cars I could pull the rack from for upgrades. Of you need the numbers made up let me know. For me I feel it's an engine out job and it's still difficult.

              Hi Des,

I know this idea is difficult to get people to come on board, but I am very keen to see it through nonetheless even if it takes a year or more as my S cars are for keeps.

I agree re the hassle of changing the rack with the engine in situ etc. etc., but once I get the rack made and in my hand I can relax and fit it when it suits.

If you're comfortable with it, pm me your mobile and we can discuss it over the phone, to allow us to make good proges on the matter and we can then advise other C4 owners on the forum where we are / it is at.

If one drives a C4 and an S2 back to back for a few days each, you become acutely aware of the slower rack on the C4.

              Thanks Des.

              Rocco Thanks.

Couldn't a LHD RS2 steering rack be fitted on a LHD UrS6 somehow?

                    Rocco Thanks.

Id be interested in one of these if its a decent price. No rush.

Like you said, the difference from driving another car is scary, I got in mine the other day after a week in the vrs and nearly went into oncoming traffic pulling out.

I can see the benefits of this and this does sound very worthwhile but can we have any possible side effects discussed. I'm thinking there would be knock on effects. As the ratio would be faster would that not make steering input heavier being further compounded by Alberts Antiroll bar modification? What could be done to increase power assistance to overcome the increased heavy steering.Would a different pas pump be required to maintain original factory feel and how would that effect the brake bomb?

It does make you wonder why Audi didn't do this themselves if it's that simple.I would be interested in ordering one for sure but need to understand what are the consequences before i ordered. Is there a link available on how to dismantle and rebuild our racks?

If you keep the stock torsion bar in the rack then I don't think the steering will be much if any heavier. The power steering part will just work harder. Audi probably didn't dream of guys wanting to thrash theses cars round bends like we want too. It's a big heavy car with some power and grip but not a sports car.

Des,i'm only thinking about the low speed steering input less turning input for the 3 point turn as apposed to thrashing them around corners. I can see the benefits though even though i drive mine like a Grandad 99.99999% of the time. Yesterday i got 470 miles on a full tank averaging 31.4 miles to the gallon.

                            Hi Mark,

Let me say from the get go, I’m not looking to have a go at anyone in this thread. I’m glad you’ve raised these queries, as it allows similar points that others may have concerns about but do not post waiting for others / the thread to progress.

It is only by everyone posting and all answering questions in a positive manner that we can all make progress on this particular modification/upgrade for all UrS6, indeed all C4q owners for all our mutual benefits.

So after all that, what am I going to say – I think in this instance, luckily for all of us including yourself, I feel you are overthinking this on this occasion. Please do not let my opinion from preventing others from posting any queries / comments / observations. I think the more questions get answered at the start the less likely we are to fall at the final fence later on.

Are the same power steering pump and bomb not used on both the S2 and the UrS6. If there is any extra load for an a quick racked UrS6, and that’s a very big if in my own mind, it would be equally offset by the difference between the S2 oem tyre/rim combo of 8 x 16 and 205/55/16 and the UrS6 combo of 8 x 17 and 255/40/17.

The UrS6 was aimed at older purchasers and the car is physically bigger, so such a first time owner profile would not be looking to drive the car quickly in an urban environment, but would still want poke on the open road. A S2 is smaller and bought by a younger first time buyer who would be twirling around the place in a built up area. Generally, as first time buyers get older they slow down in all aspect of their life. Current owners of the same cars after 18 years may not fit with these profiles.

Like I say I’d ask all readers to air their views so that we don’t miss anything and get as many people on board with this idea of a quick rack for a Cq4, as we need to have a critical mass of 20 people who are willing and able to stomp up the money when it comes to the crunch.

                            Thanks again Mark.

These car hasn't exactly heavy steering. Little heavier steering does only good.
