5 to 6 speed gearbox swap

I'm hoping to change out my knackered 5 speed for the "new" 6 speed box at the garage meet and am a little worried that I might end up with some bits missing at the crucial time. So I have a few questions for those who've BTDT and are more clevererer than me

I've attached a couple of pics of the bits I have gathered together so far, there's also a prop shaft on its way from Sal

I'm thinking I would be daft not to change the clutch whilst I'm at it so I'll be ordering one along with a new thrust race and flywheel centre bearing. I'm sticking with the 3B style clutch and flywheel, will probably get a Sachs Sport clutch. The stock one is getting quite grabby and is probably only holding out cos I'm being gentle with the gearbox..

    So!

Is the flywheel centre bearing the same as the one for the 5 speed?
Is the bearing easy to change? Do I need to get a puller?
I assume my lever and short shift kit will hook up ok?
What if the flywheel is scored? Should I bring a spare reconned one with me?
Is there anything else I need that I've missed, forgotten about?

I need a new rubber gaiter on the linkage as the one in the pic is split should I get a new bush for the ball and socket joint? There's a little slack, not much, should it just pull out by hand like that? Any other bits I should replace?

I wouldn't carry out that conversion at the garage meet! Unless you have some other means of getting home.

I have carried out 5 - 6 speed conversions, trouble is each time, I seem to use a different method!

Give me a call on 07760 414821 if you need any advice.

Sal is right, the only 5 speed selector that can be modified to shift the cogs in the 6 speed tranny is the 016 mechanism, from the type 85 Coupe q or type 44 100 / 200 q up to 1987.

5 speed (3B) selector goes into the tranny at the tail, while all 6 speed versions have the entry point at the front, just above the n/s drive flange.

Hmm, so the linkage I've bought wont work?? It fits to the box. Have a look in the second Pic and tell me. I thought my gear stick would mate up to it. Or are you saying that I need the 6 speed stick to go with the 6 speed linkage?

Yes John, you need the 6 speed lever to go with the linkage, but it may be possible to get your combo to work. I'm doing the same conversion right now.

The linkage you have bought will work fine with the box.

Sal, have you got a Gearstick and Knob from a six speeder? Or are you able to compare the 2 parts? I'll obviously want to change the knob at some stage so it makes sense.
