Any one else broke down on the way home form CC?

Well about 2 miles out of CC on the way back to the M4 i suddenly lost all power and the transmission made a HORIABLE NOISE!!..

Quickly puled over and found that the car wouldn't even go in to gear. Infact even in to first with the clutch pushed down the transmission sounded like it was filled with gravel..

Anyway to cut the story short.
I called the AA man, he jacked up the card and found the drive shaft looking like this!!:

    IMG_1564.JPG

We spent about an hour cleaning the bolts and replacing them.

After that everything was fine and i got back in one peace.
Will jack it up again today to torque them to 40NM and then hopefully everything will be ok.

Was still quite surprised that all 6 bolts had completely come away and was really luck that that it didn't happen on the motor way.

    Cheers.
    Bo

I didn't break down but got pulled over just before the M4 as my back number plate had fell off before we left CC

Got a lecture about it not being visible as I'd chucked it on the parcel shelf and then got escorted to the petrol station to get it fixed.

Yeah, that would have been a night mare.. especially as the aa don't cover you on the circuit grounds.

Thats odd Ben, i actually thought that might happen as you just had it lying in the back. I hope the copper didn't try to fine you for it..

Really glad it turned out to be just a few loose bolts Bo,
When you were putting it in gear and it was making that sound I was fearing the worst.
It sounded like the gearbox had given up the ghost.

I was really struggling to keep my eyes open as I got onto the M4. Decided the only way to cope was to get the adrenaline flowing.

No. He was fine about it. First reasonable copper I've met in a while. I knew as soon as he cut in behind me it was going to be about the plate.

He did have a good look round the tyres once he found out I'd took it on the track but wasn't bothered about the chunks of rubber hanging off the NSF tyre.

I think he was yet another person who thought I was mad taking an 80TDi out on track. I got a right slagging off every time I drove to the start line. It was like a walk of shame

Stu text me last night about your driveshaft Not good.

Have you got new bolts and lock plates for it? Might be worth changing them all on that one. I had a mate with a MkII golf that had the same problem. He was posing in town and launched it only for both from driveshafts to pop out. He'd missed out a lock plate on each side and it had slowly worked all the other bolts loose as well.

Ahh well that was lucky then
Yeah, i have to say maximum respect for taking your car on the track. im sure it must have got eaten by all the other power monsters out there .

No haven't got new bolts or lock plates yet. Do you think they need should be replaced?
After we cleaned them they looked ok and didn't seem to have any fractures. But i guess its better safe than sorry.
                Cheers.

I was nodding off on the M4 too, nursing the car home with the suspected blown head gasket. Scared myself witless when my elbow slipped off the window trim

I'm just hoping now that the head is not cracked..

Yeah that hurts when your elbow slips and you bang your head on the window, but I doubt it will have done more damage than a small bruise. You'd know if you had a crack in your head
