Probably a common question but I hope the twist in this one still makes it valid. First off, the difference between the two are that the ABY one is 1" shorter, right? I'm planning on building a one-piece shaft, as seen on tdif.com and motorgeek.com. Now... I would like to retain my 5-speed but have the option to go 6-speed in the future. Suppose I make a 6-speed shaft and use two 1/2" alu spacers on each end to make up for the 1" I'd be missing? What do you think?

Wow - what does one build a propshaft from then ?
Assuming there are no major mechanical issues with strength, reliability, balance or whatever then I think your suggest of using two small spacers is a good way to get you a propshaft that works with both gearboxes.

There should be no problem, at least not according to the shop I talked to. They said since I'm not going to have a lot of power, just 400-450hp, and it's fairly short... No problem. They're building it from a 3" pipe with 1.6mm thickness! At 1000hp they switch to 2.4mm thickness instead. Well, it also depends on the length of the shaft as well. Anyway, SEK3200 didn't sound too bad after all, that's like £250-ish for a light weight prop.
Just to clarify - has anyone here meassured EXACTLY how much longer the 5:er is to the 6:er?Comment

I would say the difference in length is going to be the same as the thickness of the gearbox spacer for the dual mass flywheel. Just a guess

Like your thinking their John - its going to be there or thereabouts...

I think even without the spacer, the 6 speed box is still longer than the 5. There are quite a few members on here, running ABY cars, converted to run single mass flywheels.
Still running the original propshafts...
Will converted his 7A-engined car to 3B with 6 speed, single mass flywheel. He still had to shorten his 7A propshaft, IIRC 20mm...

I used the front bit of a RS2 shaft and the rear bit from the s2 3B.
And I'm using a SM flywheel
So that has nothing to do with it.

Never said dual / single mass flywheel dictates the prop length. I did say however, it DOES dictate the use or non-use of the engine-to-transmission spacer...Originally posted by JefferI used the front bit of a RS2 shaft and the rear bit from the s2 3B.

hi, as I rally a ur, I am very interested in saving weight on the car [and navigator]. how much weight is saved by the light weight prop, also dont forget there is some room for ajustment on engine and gearbox mounts [ 5mm est].... ray

Don't know if you heard of this guy Mance, aka pissedoff90 aka audiwidget depending on forum. He claims his new setup weight 9lbs plus joints. Now, the stock weighs like 35lbs... And it's reprociating mass too! I'll be using it on my track car!
Did you know that on the A2 Audi used a one-piece prop?
Anywho, still need a meassurement of the 6-speed shaft if anyone has got a prop laying around. I do think it was 20mm but I'm not sure. This would mean two 10mm spacers on each end which I hink it doable.Comment
