Box has to come off, I'm afraid. The distance the slave cylinder pushrod will have to travel to actuate the release arm is too great. You won't be able to bleed the system properly.
I made the same mistake in '98, fitting a 6 speed box in an S2-engined Coupe quattro type 85, using a 3B flywheel with the engine-to-transmission spacer in place. It just wouldn't bleed. Eventually, I managed to get some clutch actuation, till the pushrod fell into the transmission.
Gearbox had to be removed to rectify the problem.

Measure the thickness of the spacer in between the engine and the box, then make a new slave cylinder pushrod that's exactly that much longer. Should work, but it's not a perfect idea (BTDT), but at least it'll save you from pulling the box again.

Made a longer Pushrod and fitted it in today, Problem i get now is that the Clutch pedal travels fully but wont return.
If the clutch travels 50% then it returns ok.
I used a 10cm rod , thats bout 9mm more than what it should be (original length + spacer) cause the shorter rods i tried kept comming loose and falling off.
Any ideas why i not getting return on the pedal ?

How about remove all bell housing bolts, slide box back a little, out with a drill. use drill to cut through spacer, should come out in two or three pieces....

Yep, bled the Slave out twice to make sure..
Giving it some time for any airbubbles to cum up but doesnt seem to help.
Maybe cause i got extra 9mm on the pushrod its not returning like it should.
I will try again with correct length push rod, else the box comes off again.

OK - Read this !!
I tried the correct Length Pushrod (Original 84mm + 8mm Spacer thickness = 92mm) this did not get the pressure plate seperating from clutch.
Then i tried a 96mm Pushrod - this gave me seperation but not enough and poor return of pedal.
Thus i moved onto a 100mm pushrod - this got the seperation ok but pedal dosent return.
All the time bleeding the system.
Anyone know the total height of a 034 SPec flywheel and clutch package ?
