    Short shifter kit problem

I almost had a heart attack I had this noise that sounded like a really tiny knocking sound when i changed gear or engaged reverse lock out (pushing the shifter down) Stoped in the pissing rain and nothing wrong under the car at first inspection

So i drive home very carefully now going about 20mph because i think the gear box is going to drop out

I get home about 11ish have a quick look in the dark knowing that i had put the short shifter in not to long ago and most theoretical cause of any problem. The R ring clip had not droped which was my 1st suspition.

So i leave it to my split today and i take it all apart and find the ball joint had droped causing the linkage to hit the top of the box i am gessing?

    Picy

Mine has started falling apart as well. I guess Mk1 golf parts aren't suitable for our uses.

I'm getting rid of it and going back to a stock shifter.

Hmmm - I have one of the Billzcat units waiting to go into Kitty, a brand new one. But seeing as it's sitting in the living room at the moment (along with a Spec clutch and flywheel - the other new bits are in the hallway!!!), I think I'll look at this in more detail and see if I can do a spherical bearing version as a potential replacement, something with mounting shoulders that prevent the unit from dropping as indicated above.

I think it will be fine, i just used a punch to get it back in to the correct place and then used some sekaflex to hold it there

Well I designed a barrel cam setup with bi-directional ratchet, in conjunction with twin cables to achieve a sequential shifter - no lock-outs required as reverse is positioned one click forwards from neutral (1st-5th or 6th are all backward shifts).

Sadly those drawings are "lost" on my knackered hard drive, I can't recover them (but I can do the design work again, it's fairly simple).

It would work but might be a little too complex. Plus, I am not sure how long it will be before you get bored with sequential shifts (I like driving the H-pattern shifter).

I've also been considering a simple two cable H-pattern device as well, both need a bracket or two screwed onto the gearbox housing to transfer cable motion to the shift finger. This would be easy to arrange as I know a chap called Gordon Risely, who is part of RCS control cables, and they make cable operated shift units already.

At the moment I am doing a Mil-Spec UJ coupling for the shift rod that attaches to my five speed unit, and I could certainly look at the shift housing and design a more durable spherical bearing unit that replaces the existing piece, in short-shift configuration.

The sequential unit would be nice - but I am doubtful of the advantages, you still need to declutch unless something is introduced into the ignition to allow a cut of power to the spark plugs to allow flat-shifting.

I'll concentrate on the H-pattern stuff for now, but if anyone wants to help me run with the ball on the development of a genuinely bolt-in swap sequential shifter, let me know!

I don't think their 4wd gearboxes are suited to our application? I didn't see anything with side flanges and a rear output flange. That said, if you're looking to move the engine and box rearwards then a transfer box type might be the way to go.

Obviously not a problem for the T4 though, unless you've got mid engine and quattro in that?!! I'd be interested in scheming something like that!!
