      And 4 years later....

I still have the same noise.... Now that I'm back in the uk I'm starting to investigate again. Given that I've done something like 15k miles since I heard the noise I think it is unlikely to be clutch - but who knows....

i think you hear your torsen diff. its begin to rattle on low revs, lots of quattros have this problem with single mass flywheel. i had the same problem, i solved it by changing the flywheel for a dualmass flywheel. there is no other way to solve this problem

Single mass is noiser only when its fitted to a car that had a dual mass and the clearance between the slave cylinder pushrod and cl\release bearing is too great and the bearing is allowed to rattle around.

I had this problem and changed my clutch and put and 034 bearing in there...got worse. Changed my box for rs2...same noise...changed the bearing for used stock one...still noise.

Then I gave up, I got fed up with looking at the underside of an s2 lying on my back which any of you which have done it lying on your back will understand

When the engine is out next I'll check the clearance for the bearing and adjust with a cap on the end of the slaves rod of some sort.

Have also a sound like this and got it only under load. Read through and I believe it is gearbox chatter or something like this. I will see if castrol TAF-X will solve this.

Info: car had dual mass before.

i would rather stick with SM and a bit noise than changing back to DM :-)

Is this a 3B motor? Have a quick look at the clearance between the crank pulley and the lower timing belt cover, the small metal one.
