ABY transmission rebuild

Hi.
My 1st gear was always difficult to select but from yesterday 2nd decided to be as bad or even worse so it's time to start thinking about removing box and replacing synchros.
my question is,is there special tools required other then usual workshop tools to do the job and once the box is stripped is there any known upgrades I could do to it like installing some parts from RS4 ???
I don't know,just generally something worth doing once the box is removed ?

Thsts whst I would do as you will end up spending a small fortune on parts .

Probably a cheaper option. From your description Pete I would be surprised if you don’t need a new 2nd gear ratio too. Parts for the 01E are crazy money. Some of the bearings are well over £200+VAT
