In Denmark I just tell the MOT guy that the car has permanent AWD and if he puts it on the rollers, I will send him a bill for a new drive train. Then the guy takes the car around the block and tries the brakes and then he normaly comes back and tells me that it brakes really nice And that it is a really fast car
Well here's what happens in Northern Ireland where all government test centres only have 2-wheel rollers. I asked the tester about it today as they moved me from one test bay to another when I said it was permanent 4WD.
The answer was quite ingenious - during a brake test on each axle, the rollers are programmed to turn in opposite directions so that no torque is transmitted to the other axle via the centre diff. Sure enough when I watched the test you could see the wheels going forward for the test on that side, then backwards while test on other side was performed.
If I was feeling more intelligent tonite I would be wondering what the effects would be with a limited slip diff front or rear, as opposed to the infinite slip (open) diffs we have standard that allow this counter rotation trick to work. Guess it must be OK as there will be loads of scoobies, evos and other toys with LSD transmission at the rear.
The test centre only has this capability on one lane - hence why I was moved !
Glad to see the car sailed thru testing with only a comment on worn appearance of front brake discs.
Just to confirm at my MOT the other day my tester ragged the car up and infront of the bays with a little box in the passenger footwell to check the brakes. They SHOULD NOT put it on the rollers... Ask for it to be treated like a land rover if you are in any doubt.
Cheers,
Steve.
