    3B s2 coupe to 01E 6speed shift linkage

just picked up a ’91 Audi S2, and the previous owner didn’t know much about it (I got a great deal on the car!).

After some digging and fixing a few small issues, I noticed the car has an 01E 6-speed transmission. However, the shift linkage and shifter appear to be homemade, and as a result, the car is very difficult to drive and shift. The gears are all over the place, making it nearly impossible to get a smooth drive.

Does anyone know which linkage and shifter assembly are needed to get this setup functioning properly? Any help would be appreciated

Hi and congrats on the purchase of your 3B!
Ideally you need the linkage from an S2 ABY (coupe or avant) these are pretty hard to come by. You also need the reverse gear lockout plate that bolts to the tunnel as the 5 speed lockout is built into the gearbox. Without the 6 speed lockout plate it is entirely possible to engage reverse gear at speed which you do not want to do.

BTW we love pics here ;-)

Just thought, Alex at Ultra Performance might be able to help with the shifter and linkage.

I think i did well. Got the car for 4000€ it works well, other than the gears and some small things, That comes with an old car it has done 224.000km IMG_1270.jpeg IMG_1262.jpeg

As John say's the best solution is the six speed linkage from an S2/RS2, that would be pretty much play and play, though as he say's you must attach the reverse lock out plate, you really don't want to change down into reverse as opposed to first, that would be pretty disastrous.

Alex at Ultra Performance would be my first choice if going aftermarket.

That looks like a really tidy car and at 4000 Euro's a true bargain, you got really lucky there!

              Just a thought...

It may actually make more sense to find a 3B gearbox and linkage and put the car back to stock. The sixspeed box is worth a lot more than an old five speed and unless your going to go for high (over 450bhp) power the five speed will hold up fine.

The top speed's are virtually identical and the five speed box is smoother to use plus an original car will always be worth more.

I will try with the shortshifter and s4 rod… shipping is really really expensive to my country

That should work fine as long as it all fit's to to the top of an S2 gearbox, the six speed linkage has a couple of moving parts involved unlike the super simple five speed's single rod, just don't forget the lockout plate.

Yeah, I doubt there happens to be a spare 3B gearbox up there and getting one shipped would be crazy money, am a little envious, not just of the car, I'd love to live on the Faroe Islands. Though I understand things are very expensive there in general, with long and dark winters.
