So a few will know that iv got a UR in building from the ground up and iv got a long list of parts to buy and the list is only getting longer. My question for today is. Does anyone know if it’s possible to put a s2 5speed gearbox in a UR Quattro. Only reason I ask is because trying to a gearbox for a RR engine is like near on impossible.
Is it possible to put a 5 speed s2 box in a ur

Hi mate
I can't answer your first question but you will probably need a matching diff?..
However..
I have a gearbox here that came from a pearlescent white UR quattro. The box was changed under warranty by the main dealer when it started making noises, IIRC the gearbox was low on oil. It will obviously need to be opened and inspected.
I believe it's a torsen box.
If this is of use to you let me know. -
I've not owned a UR, let alone an RR, am guessing they had the 016 gearbox with a lockable center diff?
I'd have thought a 7A or 3B gearbox would be the easiest to find and fit and best match ratio wise but I have no idea what diameter the output flanges are on a UR or if their interchangeable with later gearboxes.
Plus the rear diff would need to be changed to 4.11 to match as John say's above, it also would probably mean fabricating mount's and customising a prop shaft so far from straight forward.1990 B3 2.0 80 quattro.

Early URs had lockable centre diff, later ones had Torsen.Comment

So iv managed to do a small amount of looking in to it. Now all the RR ones iv seen are a lockable front diff yes. That’s not to say that others aren’t torsion diffs.
now when I say it’s a rebuild the car is literally a shell that’s all I have so it’s a build from the ground up.
Iv managed to find out of my parts a few bits including a coupe Quattro gearbox. But I think this come
from a kv so unsure what the ratio would be like on a RR.
I do have a s2 box I brought of a fourm member some time ago that I was planning on using. But when I ordered a linkage set for the car it come has a 2 bar system so will not work on the s2 gearbox.
now I have 2 options I use the coupe Quattro one and hope for the best I must say I do hate doing a job twice. Other option is I use the 2 box and find away of making the linkage fit.
iv got a complete s2 running gear I brought if you kitt so diffs etc isn’t going to be a issue.
i sometimes wounder what iv got my self in to.Comment

I hate doing jobs twice as well, especially something like a gearbox swap, I don't think any of us would do that for fun.
Which S2 gearbox is it? Five or Six speed? The easiest way to make a linkage fit would be to adapt the complete relevant S2 one to fit a B2 chassis which shouldn't be too bad of job with a five speed but a bit of a pain with the six speed.
And which KV Coupe quattro, B2 or B3, am guessing late B2, do you know what code it is? It'll be three letters stamped on the underside.
Edit... Just reread the title will assume you've got an S2 five speed, that's going to be the easiest to mate up with my old drive shaft's and rear diff.

Just checked, all WR Quattros had manually operated rear and centre diff locks.
The Torsen centre diff came in 1988 with the MB and continued into the RR. These cars would only have a rear diff lock switch.Comment

The S2 5 speed is a really nice box, helically cut gears so it's smooth and quiet. Not as strong as a 6 speed but it depends how much power you're going for. I fitted a 6 speed to my 3B but I remember the 5 speed being really nice to drive.I hate doing jobs twice as well, especially something like a gearbox swap, I don't think any of us would do that for fun.

Totally agree. The S2 five speed is the nicest to use out of all the the quattro cars I've driven, super smooth and quite, almost fall's between gears once you've gotten the feel for one and is the going to be a good match ratio wise for the RR or 3B engine, not sure which he has but they're almost identical.
If you recall I was musing about fitting my old 3B box into my RS2, much to everyone's disgust, which would have been silly but would have improved the driving experience IMO and my RS2 six speed is still about as smooth as they get. I would have obviously kept the six speed, linkage and sub frame.
The five speed's seem to cope with up to 450bhp and 600nm, I think beyond that would be pushing it, though it would depend a little on how the car is driven.

So I won’t be running any more then 400 bhp. So 5 speed with be enough power.
the only other option is for me to run a s4 box like wha in my 90 but I would prefer to keep it looking has it should. It’s going to be hard enough keeping it looking correct due to finding the correct dash and the correct air boxComment

It will be brown so if you want it black you’d need to paint it. I have a set of WR door cards too, and some front and rear skirts and bumpersComment
