Can someone confirm if the V8 torsen internal will it as is in the RS2 diff?

Can someone also tell what must be done to have this torsen as a full locking diff too??

    Thanks

Torsens cannot be locked. Only an "open" diff can be locked, but any LSD or Torsen or similar cannot be locked. A TorSen will mechanically lock itself if it feels there is a need, but usually it'll transfer power from a spinning wheel to the wheel with more traction...

So, if you put a V8 torsen in the rear, you'll loose the locking ability, but you'll have the bragging rights of being able to get more power to the rear wheel with more grip.

I believe that a Torsen CAN be machined to accomodate the locking mech's of the RS2 and S2 - doesn't anyone have a pic of a S2 diff? The left side of the diff should have some sort of machined in splines. But like NoNonsense says... Is there a point?

          Caterpillar,

Sorry but I don't understand what you were saying.

Are saying that the lsd from the V8 diff will fit inside the housing of the Coupe?

          Thanks

I've never heard of a Torsen diff being made lockable like a normal non-Torsen diff. Well short of just welding it shut - but that kinda defeats the purpose.

I don't pretend to be an expert on this subject, but I'm trying to publish what I know - and other useful links - onto S2 central. Check out the Transmission pages on the Technical chapters at http://s2central.net

Happy to add more FACTS, photographs and part number contributions for the greater good !

              Spanish,
we are saying that you physically remove the TorSen section of a V8 housing and swap it with the open diff section inside our rear housing.

Also, Like Paul just said above, a TorSen can't be locked manually...it will lock itself if the conditions require, although if you want a user-lockable diff, you'll need an open diff. Also, rally cars that run a locked diff don't run TorSen center, they run a welded open diff usually because it's much lighter and less bulky than a torsen unit.

                Thanks,

                No I don't want a lockable diff. I prefer 70/30 to the outside wheel than a 50:50

I might be able to get a rear torsen in dismantler here. So if there is no problem I will do it.

What about the flanges (v8 or Coupe). They both are 108mm but the Coupe has one with the locking mechanisim. So can I use it and just disconnect the wires, wont do anything, correct?

                Cheers,
                Rafael

I don't see a problem using a diff housing that originally had the locking mechanism as the casing for Torsen diff internals.

Just wish I had all these parts lying onthe floor in front of me for cold hard factual information...

Good to hear Albert. I can tell you the outcome of a lockable TorSen now, though...unfortunately, you'll just have a dummy switch in the cabin because you can't lock a TorSen. Anyway, you'll really enjoy the TorSen there and you'll really notice the difference down the road (literally). I am taking on a fun project sometime in the spring...I'll be taking a tranny from a 4000 CS (on your side of the atlantic, that's the B2 i think)...i'll be using the center diff for locking and taking V8 TorSens and putting them in the front and rear diffs. The V8 torsen fits into the B4/5 rear end (i've seen it on a B5 A4 hillclimb car) and the 4000 has the same front diff as the B4/5 rear...so another V8 torsen up front. I think some machining needs to be done for the front, but it's worth it in my eyes....

Would it be possible to put the front torsen from B2 to front 01E transmission, is that what You are talkin about here ? Can You do some more explanation of that ? I have B2 complate in my back yeard, it has lookable all diffs. What could be transfered to my S2 from that B2, and what has to be done to put torsen in the front 01E transmision ?

The question tha still is in my mind: The V8 torsen with the 017525021Q has exactly the same dimentions as the open one from the RS2 or the S2 and will fit in as is???

That's the spec I'd want on a trackday/funday car with LSDs (Torsen) front & rear and a lockable centre for gloriously predictable power slides.

On the road I'd say that Torsens all round would be just fine - jury is still out !
