  • Master cylinder rod failure

car has been running brilliantly for a while then yesterday i went to go for a drive. depressed the clutch pedal, engaged reverse, then wallop. the clutch pedal snapped forward away from foot

saw £ signs run in front of me expecting a major issue with the clutch.

crawled under the dash and had a closer look at pedal essembly and found the master cylinder rod had snapped clean off

from the fracture joint it had been going for some time. also noticed that the rod was bent

thought that if i could remove the nut portion on the bent rod i could attach a section of studding to at least get me home. but no, this nut is part of the assembly so could only add studding by removing the assembly, drilling and tapping it m6, then add the studding.

ive read previous threads and seems to have happened to a few other forum members. how long are they likey to work for, and is it a sign that my new 'K'reg aby is getting old and fragile, just like me

Is yours a 6 speed Brian?

If so I think it's the slave push rod and not the master that connects to the pedal

Agreed, the master is under the dash, and the slave in the bell housing....

A new one is the only remedy, but when mine when I had the whole lot done as the clutch plates were worn. (Slave was done while it was all off too....)

          Good luck.

          Cheers,

          Steve.

Picked the S2 up today . damm it feels nice getting back into the car after just a weekend without it.

trouble is after such a serious fault with the master cylinder push rod, i drove home very slowly from the garage like a saint, paranoid the damm thing would snap again

cheered up that they did a good job, and was only charged £112 for the work (part+labour+vat) so was nicely surprised.

vw/audi specialist garage over basingstoke near the leisure park did it if anyone is in need in the future.

Thats a reasonable price for a fairly tedious job IMO...

Have heard of these happening b4 - must get a look at mine to see if I can spot any cracks !

Brian, which garage is that??? If there is a trusty place a couple of miles down the road that would be quite good for either of the audis sat on the drive. glad to hear you got it sorted.

if the rod from master cylinder has an rubber ,vibration damper i think, on it then that will fail because the rod will bend and brake from the thread. The best choise is to put in one solid rod without that intermediate piece.
                  All the best!
