I have a spare CBL gearbox for my UrS4 which I want to fit because 1st is very noisy on the original. The problem is I don't really know any history of the spare, so I want to strip it and see it there is any evidence of damage to 1st gear like this
The manual for the 01E is on-line for cheap at erwin - the official audi source. I have it here on paper but its hundreds of pages. Any time I have skimmed it, I am amazed at the continual references to umpteen special tools, drifts, pullers, shims etc etc and it would be a brave lad that ventured in there without some experienced eyeballs helping you along.
AFAIK gearbox rebuilding is a specialist activity, as Paul rightly points out, lots of special tools required etc. By all means go for it, but I don't expect many people on here will be able to offer much advice apart from the above.
Cheers,
Steve.

O and you also need to know what to look for. I must do a thread on here for all you lovely people.

I know about all the special tools required, but could I get the box apart to inspect 1st gear without any of the tools?

Paul
Paul is right, attempting to strip and rebuild a gearbox like this will involve many specialists tools and a lot of knowledge.
As it happens, I used to build gearboxes myself, and I would only attempt this with the right tools and a decent sized work bench along with a very clean area to work in
Ok, now if you have some kind of mechanical skill and understand how a tranny works it wouldnt scare me to open one, I have seen a split GB on a workbench that wasent meant for assembly again, and its true its alot og parts You must have control of.
And of course the most important bit: A good manual and work instructoin. Other than that it would be to clen a big area for the parts and fire up the digital camera and take a picture for almost every screw You loosen, (have saved me alot of work)
When You guys mention alot of "special tools" do You mean so special that the tool is designed for only that tranny for one purpose, or are we talking standard pullers in various sizes?
