6 speed gearbox in 80 avant fwd

A friend of mine has an 2.8 30V 80 avant FWD, his gearbox is about to break, so we thought it would be nice to put an 6 speed gearbox in it.

Currently the engine goes in the rev. limiter at 260 km/h on the speedo, it would be nice to have a little less rpm's.

So is it possible to fit an A4/A6 V6 6 speed gearbox? If yes what exactly do we need, gear linkage? clutch? driveshafts?

    thanks

I don't know the gearbox code, we haven't bought an 6 speed yet. The current gearbox is the standard v6 2.6 12v gearbox, the engine is from an A4. HTH

Why do you wnat a 6 speed in there? The 3B and ABY top gear ratios are almost the same. The only way to get longer ratios is diesel 'box or a B5 S4 box.

SOrry, I realised that when I read it was currently a V6 motor. Best option is surely a 2wd diesel box?

r5 and v6 trannys DOES fit in the car; but things may be different. the gearlink are deff different. the flywheel and clutch, and the propshafts... you may need 2 right hands propshafts.......

thanks for the input, are you sure about the propshafts, I guess it's the same as driveshafts?

I hoped someone had done this before, I like to know what I can expect before starting with something

So you need to change to a six speed so that you can reduce revs at 260km/h? What's the point?

hi, I've just finished converting my 80 avant tdi to 6 speed, parts needed, 6 speed box code ARX,found in the earlier A6 2.5tdi five cylinder, S2 front sub frame, custom gearbox mounts/brackets (although I'm trying to locate some S2 ones) the ARX linkages (although again I'm looking for S2 linkages) everything slotted together easy with no real problems, driving it now is very different than before, seems more urgent through the gears (the engine has been tweeked a little)..

woohoo finally someone with a BTDT, subframe won´t be necessary cause it´s a V6 so it should have the right subframe already.

But the gearbox is hard to find I guess, and your car is a 4 cylinder right? If yes the bolt pattern differs from the V6 AFAIK

                            hi,

I'd be very surprised if they didn't match up, I've read of a Lotus espirt with an Audi V8 using a four pot TDI 6 speed gearbox, infact when I stripped the doner A6 and got to the box I thought I'd cocked up as it look completely different, but using a spare block I found at least four bolt holes lined up, so grabbing the bull by the horns I set about stripping the engine out of my 80, on fitting the 6'er I found that every single bolt for the 5'er bell housing went back into the 6'er! perfect match...

as for subframe I only chose to swap it due to the TDI subframe only having one bracket for the mount, S2 having two..

                              ok thats good to hear.
But it only works with S2 6-speed gear linkage right? that a pitty because of the rareness and prices of it...

what flywheel and clutch did you use?
