Strongest gearbox for 3B

Bring one with you to the mini meet this weekend and I'll ask some people. I have a meeting aith a Tribology consultant next week as they are doing some work for me on a few projects at work .I'll ask them what they think about it. It would be useful to take a bearing with me.....

NO! The one i have is proper ****ed, not much hardening left on it. But thats better so they can see which part takes the load and which is the weakest area.

A new one would be useful to see what the ball contact angle is and what the assembly tolerances were (bearings are made to different industry standards). What is the cage material in the stock bearing? Who supplies these bearings dude and can we get one?

I can get a new one easily. Its made by the massive germany company FAG. They make loads of stuff. There cage is missing Better buy a new one then

I know FAG. They do some good stuff and they will have multiple versions of the same bearing which differ in price, strength and durability. I have a few FAG catalogues in work. There are different grades of steel and varying precision which have a big effect on bearing performance. SKF may do an interchangeable bearing too as bearings come in industry standard sizes. Once we get a few measurements off a new bearing, the options will become clearer.

The 016 gearbox has a reputation of being overengineered .
If you can get one from a 200TQ , not the 20V , the fdr will match
the S2's and there's no need to change the rear diff .
If not , I have an urq rear diff available .
Ur-q is 35/9 , the others except some audi 200 20VT are 37/9 .
S2 fdr is also 37/9


It should be a drop in replacement if you use the transmission mounts from
an Ur-q or similar . Lots of cars use these , must have the pn's somewhere .

You will have a center drive shaft issue , as the 016 is longer then the 3B box .

RS4 box will go in but it is not a straight swap, the mounting holes are different and only four bolts align up, also you need custom bolts machining to suit and a notch needs cutting out of the bell housing for the speed sensor to still function. And lastly there is no mounting boss for the procon ten system so its either have someone design and implement a new bracket or do without procon ten. I had an e-mail of a bloke who done this to a S4 (aby) and it works a treat even down to the oil cooler the RS4 has If you want i can cut and paste the e-mail here

Sort me out a bearing then Lee, super strong!! Original no. is FAG 563466AB

It's true, when I re-built our router here at work I had to use special bearings that would run at high speed and take the end loadings required, they were twice as much but still not that dear when you consider the work of stripping things down and re-building. The main visible difference was that the cage was made from Fibre as opposed to metal.
