    RS2 FLYWHEEL PROBLEMS, 3b Upgrade ?

    Hi All
Just rebuilt my RS2 engine after turbo failure (thrust bearing), full rebuild, new rods, 3071 turbo etc and now having problem with clutch slip, engine out again, clutch and plate both same as old one so starting to suspect flywheel, Does anyone know how to test the DM flywheel ???. As an alternative I am looking to change to a 3B flywheel and sachs race clutch but cannot find a flywheel, Anyone out there know where I can buy one ?

much easier to find are 7a flywheels, they weigh a bit more than a 3b but less than a DM.And i have heard they work with a 3b clutch no problem, you could also have it turned down to the same thickness as a 3b although some say this will put the whole bottom end out of balance.

A new or nearly new 3B flywheel from a car that was in production for roughly 1990-1993?

Your better off buying this http://www.034motorsport.com/product...ducts_id=13849

(Correct me if I am wrong)

          Cheers,

Ask for the price and make sure your sitting down

Ask for the price of a dual mass whilst your at it

By it 2nd hand have it skimmed and balanced.

I didn't say it would be cheap, but your previous post insinuated that it would be NLA and could not be bought!

No you didn't understand my post was in regards to expecting to find a new or nearly new 3B flywheel on the forum on a car that's been out for 15 years, if you want it in that condition you will have to buy new and be prepared to pay the price!

                  Hi All
I have price for a new 3B flywheel, £60 more than a dual mass flywheel
cannot find 2nd hand 3B anywhere, Not a cheap option when clutch is £500
on top of price of flywheel
Original issue was unsure of the condition of the DM flywheel and whether this
is what was slipping, Is there anyway of checking it, I've marked it and tried to rotate (by hand), There is movement of 10mm in one direction and about 25mm in other direction but this is hand power and not 360HP!. I have not really found anything on the forums about power handling of the DM flywheel, One opinion was 420 to 450 max

DM can handle up to 400 bhp I would say the main problem however is the friction plate, in comparison to the options for the single mass there isn't many.

It's main benefit is smooth nature and it removes vibrations.

The Sachs option is about the best unless other people know other options.

IME, just get the SM flywheel on there, it makes a good difference to the feel of the car and you can get a wider range of clutches on there. It'll handle the power no probs. Get a second hand one and have the friction surface cleaned. No issuses with the engine balance then.

Intention is to go above the 400 and I think its best unless I'm 100% that the DM is going to be OK that I bite the bullit and do the 3B/7A conversion now rather than have
to take the Engine back out again later. There's no point in spending on DM race clutch only to have to by another for 3b in a few months time so I'm still looking for that flywheel

Have decided that is the way to go and use Sachs Race Clutch with organic full face as opposed to sintered pucks, just need to get hold of the flywheel now

DM flywheel can only handle up to 400bhp?? where does it say that?I have never heard of that before, and if so,why is that? BM flywheels are only made to reduce vibrations.Their material is just as good as any single mass flywheel like the 3b for example.
can you post a link you have found that info Jamo?

Plenty of tuning posts advising of the problems with high hp cars and DM flywheel on this very forum

They can't handle torque due to their dampening nature. Once your above 400 bhp you will be generating enough torque to give them problems.

Speak to a clutch company or see for example this Sachs article if you don't believe

We were approached by David Kennedy, staff writer on “Performance VW” magazine, to give our recommendations for a high performance clutch that would handle the additional torque achieved form his re-mapped Tdi engine. The common problem he was experiencing was the clutch/flywheel shuddering under load, and from his experience, Sachs Race Engineering offered the best solution to this problem, based on the number of tuners and owners using this kit. So we advised that with his level of tune, it was still advisable to stick with dual mass flywheel, mainly for comfort reasons, and he would need an up-rated Sachs clutch cover, matched to a rigid organic drive plate, which gives a virtual OEM pedal response, but is rated at 407 lb/ft torque when used in combination with the up-rated organic drive plate. On higher torque applications Sachs now have a complete billet steel flywheel and clutch module, but due to the loss of the dual mass flywheel a little more vibration transfer from the engine can be expected, but the flywheel will never fail, which can be a problem with the dual mass flywheel, when subjected to high torque loads.
